In this episode I demonstrate an easy way to turn glass bottles or jars into simple candle lanterns. These lanterns are great for camping as they are wind-proof and provide a good amount of light. They are also handy to have around during power outages or just as a decoration. You can make these candle lanterns in many different sizes and styles, your creativity is the limit.

A few extra tips in regards to cutting the glass:
-Thicker glass cuts easier using the method shown in this video. Thin glass will often break randomly rather than following the scribed line.
-There are many different ways to cut glass, this method is just what I've found to produce consistent quality results.
-Obviously whenever dealing with glass it's important to practice extreme caution as glass can be very sharp.
-After using the glass cutter make sure to clean up all the tiny glass shards. A wet towel or rag will pick them up easily.

Why bother making a candle lantern when you can just buy one?
While some candle lanterns can be bought for ~$20 most cost upwards of $50. Many of the candle lanterns available also use specific candles which typically cost a lot more than regular tea lights or tapered candles. Making your own is more cost effective, and if it ever breaks or becomes damaged it's very easy to replace. It's also a fun process that allows you to get creative and design whatever you please.

During a stretch of nice winter weather I wandered out into the wilderness and spent a couple of days camping. I enjoyed a simple tarp camp and wool blanket bedroll paired with a bright fire that offered a pleasant sleep despite the cold temperatures. My goal with this trip was to relax and enjoy myself so I spent a good deal of time making delicious meals over the open fire trying a variety of recipes. All in all this was an excellent trip in the outdoors.

In this episode of Woodcraft & Camping I share another simple campfire recipe based off of Nessmuk's Johnnycake.

Recipe for campfire cornbread:

1/2 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt

Mix dry ingredients thoroughly, then add:

2 tablespoons cooking oil (butter or lard also work well)
~1/2 cup water

Mix until a wet batter is formed then bake over a med-low heat until a wood sliver passes through cleanly.

As the Woodcraft & Camping series approaches it's end, I go about building the Cooking Range as described by Nessmuk in Woodcraft and Camping. I set out with the small double bit pocket axe, collect the required materials, then shape and assemble the Out-Door Cooking Range.

In this episode of Woodcraft and Camping I build the heart and soul of the camp: The Campfire. A properly built campfire will provide you with light, warmth, and a place to cook your meals. For this camp I follow the instructions as described in 'Woodcraft and Camping' to build up a full-sized campfire suitable for keeping a camp plenty warm even in sub-zero temperatures. The camp is coming together quite nicely and I'm excited to continue my stay out here in the wilderness.

The next step to getting the camp set up is to focus on the bed. Without carrying any form of sleeping pad/mattress, one must focus on the use of natural materials to make a thick, comfortable mattress. A good nights sleep shouldn't be overlooked when in the outdoors. The difference between a good sleep and a bad one is a determining factor when it comes to the success of an outing. A thick bed will not only be comfortable but will also act as an insulator from the cold ground. Following the details outlined in 'Woodcraft and Camping' I will build a simple but comfortable bed for my camp using the resources available.

The Fall season is officially upon us. In this episode I take my fully loaded pack frame and bedroll deep into the wilderness and set up a simple yet comfortable camp. Throughout my stay I complete a few woodcraft projects, cook up some delicious campfire meals, and practice a variety of wilderness living skills.

FAQ:

Location - Northern Alberta, Canada (that's as specific as I'd like to get)

Temperature - During this trip the high was 15°C (59°F) and the low was 2°C (36°F)

What about wildlife? - This area is home to a variety of wildlife including black bears, grizzly bears, mountain lions, and wolves. I do carry a form of protection in case I have any negative conflicts with wildlife but I've never been in a situation where I've had to use it.

Meals (in order as shown on screen) - Pork sausages, bannock with raspberry jam, pork and beans.

Recipe for bannock mix - 1 cup flour, 1/2 tbsp baking powder, 1 tsp salt. Mix dry ingredients thoroughly then slowly add water (~1/2 cup) while stirring until a thick dough forms. Flatten then place in a greased pan and cook over med-low heat. Makes enough for 2 filling meals.
