Tom Fletcher, the UN undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs, has warned during a visit to Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, that the US-Israel war on Iran is already hitting the country hard.

“I’ve been in Somalia for almost a week now, and I’m hearing every day, every hour, the impact of this crisis,” Fletcher told Al Jazeera.

“Remember that Somalia was already facing enormous needs … and now with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, you have a doubling of food prices, a doubling of fuel prices,” Fletcher added.

“The result, I’m afraid, is that the danger of famine is looming once again in this region. You’ve got half a million kids in severe acute malnutrition. You got a doubling in hunger past six months. So, we need the world to wake up to the crisis here.”

In an Al Jazeera panel discussion, analysts examined the deepening standoff between Iran and the United States.
Abbas Aslani, Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Middle East and Strategic Studies, said talks remain deadlocked, with no promising signals from Washington.
He explained Iran’s three-stage proposal seeks to separate nuclear issues from reopening the Strait of Hormuz, prioritising immediate regional concerns.
Aslani warned military escalation is now as likely as a diplomatic breakthrough, amid increased US military posture.
Mohamad ElMasri, Professor at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, said neither side wants war or a prolonged stalemate, raising the risk of renewed conflict.
He added Israel is pushing for escalation, seeking regime change or weakening Iran and lobbying the US to return to war.
Both said any future conflict would differ from previous wars, with wider regional and energy implications.

Iran's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, issued a defiant written statement on 'National Persian Gulf Day,' declaring that the future of the region will be "without America" and that the United States has no place in the Gulf except "at the bottom of its waters." He said a "new chapter" is taking shape for the Strait of Hormuz, with Iran controlling its management. Khamenei also vowed that 90 million Iranians would use all capabilities — including nuclear and missile powers — to defend the country. The United Kingdom has become only the second country in the world to ban the sale of tobacco to anyone born on or after 1 January 2009, aiming to create what the government calls a "smoke free generation".
The legislation also introduces new powers to regulate vaping products, including restrictions on flavours and packaging to reduce their appeal to young people.
Official data shows that more than 78,000 people die from smoking related illnesses in England annually, with the habit costing society over $59 billion each year.
Health campaigners have welcomed the historic ban but say more support is needed for the 5 million people in the UK who currently smoke.

The head of the UN's nuclear watchdog, Rafael Grossi, says much of Iran's uranium stockpile is likely still buried beneath the rubble of a facility bombed by the United States last year.
Speaking at the UN's Nuclear Non-Proliferation Conference, Grossi told Al Jazeera that until IAEA inspectors can verify the site, "we cannot confirm that this is the situation."
He added that the material is "close to weapon grade" and that there is "difficulty in accessing" the area. Iran's ambassador to the UN accused the United States of using the conference to distract from its own treaty violations. With ongoing war on Iran and global tensions, expectations for any international agreement from the conference remain low.
