EU fails to suspend Israel trade pact despite pressure over human rights concerns

The European Union has again failed to agree on suspending its association agreement with Israel despite mounting pressure.
The deal provides extensive free trade and cooperation, but critics argue Israel may be breaching its human rights clause.
In 2025, the European Commission said there were indications of violations linked to civilian deaths in Gaza and restrictions on aid.
Spain and others pushed to uphold Article 2, urging action to defend international law, but failed to secure a majority.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas rejected claims the bloc is losing credibility.
More than one million citizens, along with UN experts and former diplomats, have called for suspending the agreement.
Key states including Germany and Italy opted to keep the pact, fuelling frustration over the EU’s inaction.

Al Jazeera’s Step Vaessen reports from Luxembourg.

US-Iran talks risk turning into ‘frozen conflict’ : Analysis

Mark Kimmett, a retired US Army general and former Assistant Secretary of State for Political and Military Affairs, joins Al Jazeera live from the studio. Ukraine oil pipeline resumes as EU debates $106bn support package

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky says the Druzhba pipeline is ready to resume operations after being damaged earlier this year. The pipeline, which carries Russian oil to Hungary and Slovakia, was halted in January following a strike blamed on Russia.

The announcement comes ahead of a crucial meeting of European Union foreign ministers, who are expected to discuss unlocking a $106bn financial package for Ukraine.
Officials say momentum is building after Viktor Orbán — previously seen as pro-Russian — was voted out, raising hopes Hungary may lift its veto.

Meanwhile, Russia says a fire continues to burn at the Port of Tuapse more than a day after a Ukrainian drone strike. The port, a major hub for oil exports, has seen significant damage to infrastructure and storage facilities, with at least one fatality reported.

Iran sets conditions as ceasefire extended, tensions persist

Iran has set a key precondition for entering talks, insisting that the blockade on its ports must be lifted before any negotiations can begin. Officials accuse the United States of violating the ceasefire by targeting an Iranian vessel, escalating tensions just hours before the truce deadline.

Al Jazeera’s Ali Hashim reports from Tehran, where defiant messages continue from senior leaders and military officials, signaling readiness for confrontation while warning regional countries against supporting any potential attacks. Iran maintains it can defend its interests and counter pressure, emphasizing that ongoing restrictions amount to an act of war.

Despite rising tensions, US President Donald Trump has announced an extension of the ceasefire without specifying a timeline, keeping a fragile pause in fighting.

Al Jazeera’s Chief US correspondent Alan Fisher reports from Washington, DC, saying the extension comes at the last moment, leaving key questions about who Washington has been engaging with in Tehran and whether there is real progress toward a deal.

Meanwhile, Jason Campbell, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute, says the tone of Washington’s messaging suggests an attempt to portray Iran as divided, while shifting pressure onto Tehran to present a unified proposal for future talks.

Hormuz on edge: Trump caught between Iran’s diplomacy and war factions | This is America

In this episode of This is America, hosted by Cyril Vanier, Al Jazeera asks a critical question: who is really calling the shots in Iran – and is the US even talking to the right people as it tries to end the US‑Israel war on Iran?

From Washington, Vanier sets the scene seven weeks into the conflict. The Iranian state has not collapsed; instead, a new generation of Revolutionary Guard commanders is driving a harder bargain. While Iranian diplomats turn up for talks, the IRGC signals it is ready to maximise economic pain by threatening shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for global oil supplies.

Heidi Zhou‑Castro explains how the US president boasts of having killed so many senior Iranian leaders that “there’s nobody to talk to” – yet that same decapitation strategy may have removed interlocutors Washington now needs. She also tracks how US media moved from briefly hailing progress to warning that peace talks are “in doubt” after mixed messages from Tehran and renewed IRGC attacks on tankers.

Mike Hanna, reporting live from the White House, shows how the president’s victory narrative clashes with confusion inside his own team. Officials insist the US has already “won” the war and destroyed Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, yet even basic details such as when the ceasefire ends seem to shift with the president’s changing statements, complicating diplomacy and planning.

On the ground and online, Alex Baird highlights how one weekend seemed to offer a breakthrough: the Strait of Hormuz “completely open”, according to the US president and Iran’s foreign minister, Abas Araghchi. Within hours, the IRGC opened fire on a commercial tanker, fuelling the perception of “two Irans” – civilian leaders talking compromise and the Guard corps ready to torpedo any deal if it undermines their power.

Manuel Rapalo steps back to examine the deep trust deficit. He traces Iran’s secret nuclear work, the 2015 JCPOA, the US withdrawal from that deal, Iran’s subsequent uranium enrichment and its backing for regional allies. Both sides now assume they will be lied to, bombed or otherwise deceived, making verifiable constraints and enforcement mechanisms far more important than political promises.

In the studio, former US Ambassador to Bahrain William Roebuck and former US policy planner Jon Alterman assess how far US pressure has really gone in reshaping Iran’s choices. They argue that despite leadership losses, Iran’s system is designed with redundancy: new figures step in, the IRGC tightens its grip and the state remains capable of calibrated retaliation and tough negotiation. They also question whether the US president is seeking a realistic agreement or an Iranian capitulation that looks increasingly out of reach.

As US and Iranian teams meet under a fragile ceasefire, This is America asks whether Washington can secure a meaningful deal when it is unclear who truly speaks for Iran – and whether the US president’s claims of total victory can survive the messy, contested reality of war, deterrence and divided power in Tehran, analysis.

US, Iran ‘fighting their way to the negotiating table’, retired US general says

Mark Kimmitt, a retired US general and former diplomat, tells Al Jazeera the current posturing by the United States and Iran is an old playbook.

“It’s a classic way of fighting your way to the negotiating table,” he said. “Both sides want to demonstrate that they’re capable of fighting and they’re willing to fight, but down deep both sides want to negotiate.”

Kimmitt predicted over the next few days, “We’re going to see who blinks first.”

“They may not want peace right now, and certainly they don’t want the terms that are being offered by both sides,” he added. “But my guess is that there will be an extension of the ceasefire.”

Japan eases restrictions on lethal weapons exports to boost security cooperation

Japan has approved scrapping most restrictions on overseas arms sales, paving the way for warships, tanks and missiles to be exported.
Tokyo says this will strengthen the country's defence and deter potential threats from regional powers.
But Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's government emphasised the country will continue to uphold the principles of a peace-loving nation.
Currently, Japan has defence transfer agreements with 17 countries including the UAE, the US, and India.

Takuya Matsuda is an assistant professor at Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo.
He says the move positions Japan to strengthen its role as a regional power capable of managing any longer-term conflict.

‘Fog of peace’ obscuring viability of next round of US-Iran talks, analyst says

As uncertainty persists over whether the Iran-US talks will go ahead in Islamabad, one analyst is urging caution.

“This is what they call the fog of war, except this is the fog of peace,” said Ahmed Helal, managing director for the Gulf region at the Asia Group. “No one knows who’s going to be there.”

Helal, speaking to Al Jazeera from Doha, said the tone from both sides remains deeply concerning. “I would put my money on things getting worse before they get better because the tone is increasingly bellicose from both sides.”

Asian stock markets rise amid hopes for US-Iran talks despite ceasefire uncertainty

Asian stock markets rallied on Tuesday despite uncertainty over US-Iran peace talks, with tech stocks driving gains across the region.
South Korea's Kospi and Taiwan's stock market hit record highs, fuelled by semiconductor demand and strong export data.
Japan's Nikkei also advanced as Tokyo announced its biggest overhaul of arms export rules in decades, ending longstanding restrictions on overseas weapons sales.
However, analysts warn that shipping disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz could persist for months, even if Washington and Tehran reach an agreement in Islamabad.

Al Jazeera's Patrick Fok reports from Hong Kong.

EU credibility is on the line over Israel, says Spanish foreign minister | AJ#shorts

💾

Spain’s foreign minister has warned the EU risks losing credibility if it fails to apply the same principles to Israel’s “perpetual war” in the Middle East as it does to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He urged a unified stance, citing human rights clauses in the EU–Israel agreement and criticising ongoing violence in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon.

Displaced Lebanese remain in limbo as truce shows signs of strain

Israel's military continues to occupy towns and villages in southern Lebanon, while the temporary 10-day ceasefire, set to expire on Sunday, remains fragile. The United States is bringing together Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors for a second meeting on Thursday to discuss extending the truce. Negotiations face obstacles over differing agendas: Lebanon wants Israel to withdraw, while Israel demands Hezbollah's disarmament. Hezbollah has called on the Lebanese government not to engage in direct talks with Israel, arguing it should instead link with broader regional diplomacy involving Iran. Many displaced people remain reluctant to return home amid ongoing insecurity and Israeli demolitions.

Qatar says it is in contact with all parties before Islamabad talks

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari held his weekly press briefing in Doha, announcing that the Amir had received Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif last Thursday and expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s role in de-escalating tensions and promoting peace in the region.
Al-Ansari said Qatar is “supporting fully the efforts of our brothers in Pakistan” to mediate between the United States and Iran, noting ongoing contacts with all parties involved. He stressed that Qatar views mediation not as a “media show” but as an “effective role” aimed at advancing political solutions.
On the Strait of Hormuz, he warned that any disruption “will transfer this crisis to the international world,” affecting global energy markets as well as electricity and heating supplies. He said Qatar remains committed to its energy partners and can be “trusted very well throughout history.”
He confirmed continued direct contacts with Iran, including a recent call between the Prime Minister and the Iranian foreign minister, urging restraint and a return to peaceful dialogue.
On the ceasefire, al-Ansari said contingency plans are in place for Qatar’s national defence, with armed forces remaining on alert, while diplomatic efforts continue with all parties to extend the ceasefire or end hostilities.
He also condemned Israeli attacks on Lebanon, reaffirming Qatar’s support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and unity, and said both sides participated seriously in the first round of talks in Islamabad, while noting that contradictory reports are being closely monitored with concern.

Strait of Hormuz: How a threat became a playbook | Al Jazeera Explainer

For weeks, a US-Israel war on Iran pushed the Gulf to the brink. But the real battleground wasn’t in the air. It was the Strait of Hormuz. This narrow chokepoint, connecting the Gulf to global shipping routes, carries about 20 million barrels of oil a day, nearly a fifth of global supply, making it critical to the global economy, energy markets, and supply chains.

As tensions escalated, Iran did not fully close the strait. Instead, it reshaped it into a system of control, using drones, naval threats, and uncertainty to disrupt shipping. Traffic dropped, oil prices surged, and global trade slowed, affecting Asia, Europe, and beyond. Some vessels were allowed through, others blocked, and some reportedly paid transit fees, turning Hormuz into a strategic “toll system”.

US President Donald Trump responded with a naval blockade, escalating a geopolitical standoff, as ceasefire talks in Islamabad failed. The situation remains uncertain: Partial reopening, conditional access, and conflicting claims highlight a new reality.

This is no longer just about oil or war. The Strait of Hormuz has evolved from a threat into a playbook in which leverage, not firepower, shapes outcomes.

Gaza’s children face lasting trauma as speech loss cases rise

In Gaza, Israel's ongoing war has inflicted severe and lasting damage on children, with around 1.1 million now requiring mental health care and other support, according to the UN.
Some children, affected by shock or injuries from attacks, have lost the ability to speak.
Five year old Jad Zohud stopped speaking after Israeli bombs struck near his home, while four year old Lucine Tamboura was left unable to speak after falling from a collapsed staircase damaged in a strike. Specialists warn that without proper care, these conditions could affect children's development for years, but therapists are working under mounting pressure with limited resources.

Al Jazeera's Ibrahim al-Khalili reports from northern Gaza.

Israel’s Defence Minister vows to keep operating in Lebanon, threatens to kill Hezbollah chief

As a second round of Israel–Lebanon talks is expected on Thursday, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has issued strong threats against Hezbollah, warning leader Naim Qasem he “will pay the price with his head,” while also cautioning the Lebanese government it will “pay a heavy price” if it fails to disarm the group.
Speaking during Israel’s Memorial Day commemorations, Katz said he and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had instructed the army to continue operations in southern Lebanon against any threats, projecting a message of strength and defiance.
The remarks come as Israel faces domestic pressure and unpopularity after being compelled to observe ceasefires linked to President Donald Trump’s announcements on Iran and Lebanon.
While Israeli officials have insisted the two fronts remain separate, they are now seeking to rally support among communities in northern Israel.
At the same time, officials are viewing the upcoming Islamabad talks with scepticism, signalling expectations of failure and indicating readiness to resume strikes in both Iran and Lebanon.

Al Jazeera’s Nida Ibrahim reports from Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.

US ‘miscalculation’ complicates Iran talks, say experts; mediation continues

As the two-week ceasefire deadline between Iran and the United States approaches, tensions remain high ahead of expected talks in Islamabad, despite indications both sides may still pursue diplomacy.
Mohamad Elmasry, professor at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, told Al Jazeera the situation is “very precarious”, saying Washington “miscalculated” by declaring victory after Iran opened the Strait of Hormuz instead of also de-escalating, making negotiations more difficult following the US seizure of an Iranian cargo ship.
He said neither side has an appetite for renewed war but both are seeking an “off ramp”, warning positions have hardened, with the IRGC gaining greater influence during wartime. Elmasry added Iran may compromise on some of its demands but “won’t surrender all of them”.
Nilofer Afridi Qazi, a public policy specialist, told Al Jazeera from Islamabad that Pakistan is working “25-7” to move the dialogue forward, with expectations both sides will attend a second round of talks.
Elmasry described Pakistan as a “perfect mediator” due to its ties with both sides, helping bridge a “fundamental lack of trust”.
Qazi said mixed messaging is not unique to Iran, pointing to multiple centres of power globally and highlighting the “elephant in the room” — Israel’s influence on US decision-making — which she warned could undermine the peace process.
Both guests said talks are likely, but cautioned progress will be difficult amid rising tensions, hardened positions and deep mistrust.

Virginia voting ends on redistricting plan that could shift US House power

Voters in the U.S. state of Virginia are casting their final ballots on a key measure that could reshape federal congressional districts — and potentially shift the balance of power in Washington.

The proposed changes could give an advantage to the Democratic Party, possibly helping them secure a majority in the United States House of Representatives, where control currently hinges on just a handful of seats.

At the same time, other states are pursuing their own redistricting efforts, backed by a broader push from the White House, aimed at creating districts more favorable to the Republican Party.

The outcome in Virginia could play a decisive role in shaping the political landscape ahead of upcoming elections.
Al Jazeera's Rosiland Jordan has more from Alexandria, Virginia on what could change.

Afghan displacement crisis deepens: Pakistan strikes, thousands forced into camps

Thousands of families in Afghanistan have been forced into displacement camps following escalating clashes near the border with Pakistan.

In mountainous regions near the Kunar area, displaced civilians are now living in makeshift tents with limited access to food, healthcare, and education. Many say they fled after shelling hit their villages, destroying homes and schools.

Pakistan’s military says it carried out strikes targeting armed groups, including the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, which it claims operate from Afghan territory. However, Afghan authorities deny these accusations, further complicating tensions between the two countries.

According to the United Nations, nearly 60,000 people have been displaced in eastern and southeastern Afghanistan due to the recent fighting.
Al Jazeera's Assed Baig reports.

Ukraine strikes Russian oil refinery again: Black Sea fire, sanctions tensions & war escalation

Ukraine says it has carried out another major strike on a Russian oil refinery, targeting a key facility on the Black Sea coast.

The attack hit infrastructure near the Tuapse seaport—one of Russia’s critical export hubs—triggering a large fire and reportedly killing at least one person, with another injured.

Ukrainian military officials say the strike is part of a broader strategy to disrupt Moscow’s war funding by targeting energy exports. It marks the second attack on the same refinery within days, highlighting an intensified campaign against Russia’s oil infrastructure.

However, the strikes come amid growing international tension.
Some European allies have reportedly urged Volodymyr Zelenskyy to scale back attacks on Russian energy assets, fearing further escalation and economic fallout.

At the same time, the United States has extended a sanctions waiver allowing certain Russian oil shipments to continue until mid-May—creating a complex backdrop where military action and economic policy appear to diverge.

Amnesty report slams world leaders : “Humanity under attack” in global rights crisis

A major new report by Amnesty International warns that the global human rights system is facing unprecedented collapse, describing the current moment as a “systemic breakdown.”

The report singles out key world leaders—including Benjamin Netanyahu, Donald Trump, and Vladimir Putin—accusing them of fueling conflicts and undermining international law for power and control.

According to Amnesty, violations range from alleged war crimes in Ukraine to accusations of genocide in Gaza Strip. The report also criticizes global powers for weakening institutions like the International Criminal Court.

Amnesty’s Secretary General Agnès Callamard described it as one of the most alarming reports in the organization’s history, warning that “humanity is under attack” and accusing governments worldwide of silence, complicity, or inaction.
