A young girl in southern Lebanon joined hundreds mourning her father, one of three paramedics killed in an Israeli “double-tap” strike during the US-brokered ceasefire. At least 95 emergency responders have been killed in Lebanon, a pattern the UN says may amount to a war crime.
Since January 2025, the second Trump administration has been using AI to sell and rebrand its vision of the US. But critics say the effort is to distract and distort the public’s understanding of reality.

The war in Iran is pushing up prices of everything.
The Strait of Hormuz is not just an energy chokepoint but also a critical transit hub for pharmaceuticals.
And its effective closure is also blocking the movement of medicines around the world.

Tom Fletcher, the UN undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs, has warned during a visit to Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, that the US-Israel war on Iran is already hitting the country hard.
“I’ve been in Somalia for almost a week now, and I’m hearing every day, every hour, the impact of this crisis,” Fletcher told Al Jazeera.
“Remember that Somalia was already facing enormous needs … and now with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, you have a doubling of food prices, a doubling of fuel prices,” Fletcher added.
“The result, I’m afraid, is that the danger of famine is looming once again in this region. You’ve got half a million kids in severe acute malnutrition. You got a doubling in hunger past six months. So, we need the world to wake up to the crisis here.”

Who actually gets to go to the World Cup? With US President Donald Trump's strict immigration policies, some fans may never make it past the American border. Because while teams qualify on merit, passports don’t.
Hours after US President Donald Trump asked Benjamin Netanyahu to stop destroying buildings in Lebanon as it “makes Israel look bad”, the Israeli prime minister published a montage of forces blowing up infrastructure across southern Lebanon.
Videos showing apparent anti-immigrant attacks have been posted in South Africa, where new protests have been held demanding government action on undocumented immigration.
In an Al Jazeera panel discussion, analysts examined the deepening standoff between Iran and the United States.
Abbas Aslani, Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Middle East and Strategic Studies, said talks remain deadlocked, with no promising signals from Washington.
He explained Iran’s three-stage proposal seeks to separate nuclear issues from reopening the Strait of Hormuz, prioritising immediate regional concerns.
Aslani warned military escalation is now as likely as a diplomatic breakthrough, amid increased US military posture.
Mohamad ElMasri, Professor at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, said neither side wants war or a prolonged stalemate, raising the risk of renewed conflict.
He added Israel is pushing for escalation, seeking regime change or weakening Iran and lobbying the US to return to war.
Both said any future conflict would differ from previous wars, with wider regional and energy implications.

Iran's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, issued a defiant written statement on 'National Persian Gulf Day,' declaring that the future of the region will be "without America" and that the United States has no place in the Gulf except "at the bottom of its waters." He said a "new chapter" is taking shape for the Strait of Hormuz, with Iran controlling its management. Khamenei also vowed that 90 million Iranians would use all capabilities — including nuclear and missile powers — to defend the country. Al Jazeera's Resul Serdar reported from Tehran that Khamenei is also calling on Gulf states to distance themselves from US military presence, which Iran argues creates "vulnerability and fragility." Khamenei has not appeared in public or on video since assuming leadership after his father was killed on the first day of the war.

Representatives from nearly 60 countries have gathered in Colombia for the first global conference dedicated to phasing out fossil fuels. The summit in Santa Marta comes amid growing frustration with stalled UN climate talks and renewed urgency following disruptions to oil supplies through routes like the Strait of Hormuz. Host nations Colombia and the Netherlands say the transition is no longer a question of if, but how, though major polluters including China and the United States were absent. Delegates agreed to continue the process, with the next conference set for Tuvalu.

The United Kingdom has become only the second country in the world to ban the sale of tobacco to anyone born on or after 1 January 2009, aiming to create what the government calls a "smoke free generation".
The legislation also introduces new powers to regulate vaping products, including restrictions on flavours and packaging to reduce their appeal to young people.
Official data shows that more than 78,000 people die from smoking related illnesses in England annually, with the habit costing society over $59 billion each year.
Health campaigners have welcomed the historic ban but say more support is needed for the 5 million people in the UK who currently smoke.
Al Jazeera's Camille Nedelec reports from Westminster, London.

The head of the UN's nuclear watchdog, Rafael Grossi, says much of Iran's uranium stockpile is likely still buried beneath the rubble of a facility bombed by the United States last year.
Speaking at the UN's Nuclear Non-Proliferation Conference, Grossi told Al Jazeera that until IAEA inspectors can verify the site, "we cannot confirm that this is the situation."
He added that the material is "close to weapon grade" and that there is "difficulty in accessing" the area. Iran's ambassador to the UN accused the United States of using the conference to distract from its own treaty violations. With ongoing war on Iran and global tensions, expectations for any international agreement from the conference remain low.

US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth has appeared before Congress for the first time since the war on Iran began, facing sharp questions from Democrats over the military campaign and its estimated $25bn cost.
Hegseth defended the operation, claiming the president will secure a deal preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, but polls show most Americans do not support the war.
Democrats challenged the strategy's effectiveness and highlighted broader economic costs to American families, which one lawmaker estimated at $631bn.

Dramatic video from a railway station in Bangladesh shows a father shielding his infant underneath a moving train after the child fell off the platform. Local media reported that both escaped unharmed after eight carriages passed over them.
Video has been published by Russian mercenaries showing a heavy gun battle between Mali’s military and rebels who are seeking to overthrow the government.
During a fiery hearing in US Congress, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was repeatedly pressed over how much it cost US taxpayers to strike an Iranian school in Minab which killed 120 children. Democratic Representative Ro Khanna asked Hegseth to explain the attack and the wider financial impact of the US war on Iran, estimated at $25B so far.

It comes as people in Bamako fear a blockade imposed by al-Qaeda-linked fighters. In the north, Tuareg rebel separatists say they are preparing to retake key cities.

Hundreds of Ultra-Orthodox Jews blocked a main road to West Jerusalem, as part of protests against Israel’s mandatory military service for religious students. Israeli police attempted to disperse the demonstrators.

US officials have defended a military operation targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities, claiming they have been “obliterated” and are under constant surveillance. However, questions have been raised in Congress over whether the strikes achieved any strategic success, with critics arguing that Iran’s nuclear ambitions and conventional missile capabilities remain intact.
During a heated exchange on Capitol Hill, lawmakers challenged the Trump administration’s framing of the operation as a success, pointing to ongoing regional tensions, continued Iranian capabilities, and the financial cost of the conflict, which they say has reached billions of dollars.
