Palestinian Prisoners' Day is observed every year on April the 17th to highlight the conditions of those held in Israeli jails.
The number of imprisoned Palestinians has doubled since Israel's war on Gaza began in October 2023.
More than 9,600 Palestinians are currently detained in Israel and the occupied West Bank.
The number of administrative detainees, those held without charge or trial, has risen to more than 3,500.
That's up from 1,300 before the war.
The number of children has exceeded 350 with about half of them held without trial or charge.
And since 2023, at least 89 Palestinians have died in Israeli detention, reportedly due to hunger, medical negligence, and torture.
Rights groups say this is part of a wider system of repression.
Al Jazeera’s Dalya Al Masri reports.

The war in Iran is sending shockwaves through global supply chains, pushing up raw material costs and squeezing businesses across China.
From supermarkets to factories, companies are feeling the pressure as oil and gas prices rise due to disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz.
Common goods like plastics, packaging, and chemicals are becoming more expensive as energy costs climb. China’s manufacturing sector—already under strain from weak consumer spending—is now facing additional inflationary pressure.
One plastics vendor in Beijing says costs have jumped more than 25% since the conflict began, forcing businesses to reconsider pricing and profit margins.

Uncertainty continues around the Strait of Hormuz as Iran and the United States give conflicting statements about whether the key shipping route is open.
Donald Trump insists the naval blockade will remain until a peace deal is reached, while Iranian officials argue the strait is only open under strict conditions and Iranian authorization.
At the same time, both sides remain divided over Iran’s enriched nuclear material, with Washington claiming it will be transferred and Tehran rejecting the idea entirely.
Despite talk of progress, Iranian sources say negotiations are still at an early stage, with only a framework being discussed , not a final agreement.

An 80-year-old grandfather was reunited with his son and grandchildren in Tyre, southern Lebanon, after a ceasefire with Israel came into effect. His family had been displaced by the Israeli army since March 2, among the 1.2 million Lebanese made to leave their homes.
Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun is defending Beirut’s decision to enter into direct talks with Israel, saying the government is doing it in the interest of the Lebanese people. He was speaking after a 10-day ceasefire took effect.
On the first day of a 10-day ceasefire, tens of thousands of displaced people are returning to southern Lebanon as the army reopens the Qasemiyah Bridge for southbound traffic.
In Tyre, three missiles struck a residential neighbourhood moments before the truce, destroying several buildings, including a nine-storey block, with rescuers searching for survivors.

This episode of This Is America examines the race for a deal between the United States and Iran as a fragile two-week ceasefire nears its end. After marathon talks over the weekend failed to secure an agreement, both sides are preparing for another round of in‑person negotiations, knowing they cannot win everything they wanted from the war. On the table are Iran’s nuclear and missile programmes, US sanctions, arrangements for shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, Tehran’s regional proxies, and Israel’s invasion in Lebanon. But the Israel angle complicates matters: Iran wants Israel constrained by any settlement, while Israel seeks freedom of action to continue its campaign, leaving Washington caught between an ally and an adversary. With Trump threatening to resume strikes and tighten the naval blockade, and Iran warning it could disrupt exports and imports across the Gulf, Sea of Oman and Red Sea, we explore what is driving both sides to the table and whether a deal can be reached before the ceasefire collapses.

An Iranian academic has pushed back against claims by Donald Trump that Tehran has agreed to suspend its nuclear programme indefinitely. Speaking to Al Jazeera, Associate Professor Hassan Ahmadian of the University of Tehran says no agreement has been reached, describing ongoing discussions as preliminary and mediated indirectly.
Ahmadian says Iran considers uranium enrichment a sovereign right under international law and is unlikely to accept demands to halt it entirely or surrender enriched stockpiles. He also questioned claims that Iran would allow US access to nuclear materials.
On the Strait of Hormuz, Ahmadian says any long-term arrangements depend on US actions and adherence to commitments, warning that violations could lead Iran to reverse course.

Israel agreed to the 10-day pause in attacks against Lebanon but has refused to withdraw its troops from the south. The ceasefire was announced after officials met in person in Washington DC -- the first direct talks since 1993. Now, there is hope for an agreement to end Israel's invasion and air strikes. Hezbollah remains the main stumbling block. Israel says any deal must include the dismantling of the group, while Hezbollah says it will not lay down its weapons. So, is a lasting peace agreement possible? And how much influence does Iran have in Lebanon?

A 10-day ceasefire in Lebanon could signal that a US–Iran deal is edging closer. Tehran has welcomed the truce and called for a full Israeli withdrawal, but major challenges remain.
US President Donald Trump says restrictions on Iranian ports will remain in place despite the Strait of Hormuz being “open and ready for business.” In a social media post, Trump said the naval blockade would continue to apply to Iran until US negotiations are fully completed, adding that most points have already been agreed and the process should move quickly.
Meanwhile, leaders from the UK and several European countries are holding talks in Paris over the growing tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route.
Al Jazeera’s Alan Fisher reports from Washington, DC, and Ali Hashem reports from Tehran.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing intense scrutiny after reports emerged that his appointee for ambassador to the United States, Peter Mandelson, failed security vetting but was overruled by the Foreign Office. Starmer, who initially said full due process was followed, has admitted he was unaware of the issue at the time and plans to correct the parliamentary record. Mandelson's links to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and a subsequent arrest on suspicion of misconduct in public office have heightened the controversy. The Foreign Office's top civil servant has resigned, and calls are growing—including from within Labour—for Starmer to step down.
Al Jazeera's Milena Veselinovic reports from London.

Donald Trump says the US is nearing a long-term peace agreement with Iran, claiming Tehran has agreed to "almost everything" and that the next round of negotiations may take place over the weekend. The US president said the deal would ensure Iran has no nuclear weapons.
However, significant gaps remain between the two sides on key issues including Iran's nuclear programme, the Strait of Hormuz blockade, and Tehran's regional alliances. Analysts suggest Iran may be in a stronger negotiating position following weeks of conflict and could seek to prolong talks.
We have two specialists to discuss the conflicts in the Middle East.
Samir Puri is a Visiting Lecturer in War Studies at King's College London.
And Ali Akbar Dareini, a researcher at the Tehran-based think-tank - Center for Strategic Studies.

South Korea has more robots per capita than any other nation.
Artificial intelligence-driven automation is reshaping every corner of its economy.
The promise? Liberation from work.
But machines don't pay taxes or purchase goods that keep companies afloat.
So, how does a country transform its workforce without undermining its society or destroying it?
Al Jazeera’s Jack Barton spoke to some of the people shaping the future in Seoul.
