In January 2026, Venezuela entered a deeply contested chapter after the US removal of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. While the operation was hailed by some as the end of a brutal dictatorship, critics argue it violated international law and replaced one crisis with another.
US President Donald Trump now boasts of controlling Venezuela’s oil, as the country’s interim leadership strikes deals with Washington. Some call this a necessary transition. Opponents say it looks dangerously colonial.
So, has Venezuela moved closer to democracy, and will Venezuela’s future be decided by Venezuelans or by the US?
Mehdi Hasan goes head-to-head with Vanessa Neumann, who served as the Venezuelan opposition’s ambassador to the UK and Ireland. She defends Trump’s intervention and argues Maduro’s fall was long overdue.
Joining the discussion are:
Alejandro Velasco – Associate professor of history at New York University
Estefanía Melendez – Former diplomatic envoy for the Venezuelan opposition and associate fellow at the Centre for the Study of Democracy
Oscar Guardiola-Rivera – Professor of international law at Birkbeck College, University of London

Bad Bunny was the most-streamed artist on Spotify for four years. He headlined the Super Bowl, singing in Spanish, challenging long-held ideas about what it means to be “mainstream”. His career highlights how streaming platforms, diaspora audiences, and shifting cultural power now determine global relevance. Bad Bunny has long used his music as an unapologetic political statement, including his stance against the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Our guests discuss the political and cultural tensions his rise has exposed.
Presenter: Stefanie Dekker

Jorell Melendez-Badillo - Associate professor, University of Wisconsin-Madison

Donald Trump addressed the media in Washington, taking questions on Cuba and Iran. He described Cuba as a ‘failed state’ and suggested a potential friendly takeover, while criticising the outcome of recent talks with Iran. The US administration continues to demand a halt to uranium enrichment, limitations on ballistic missiles, and curbs on regional proxies. Further diplomatic discussions are planned, including meetings with the Omani foreign minister and US Vice President JD Vance.
Al Jazeera’s Tohid Asadi joins live from Tehran, and Nour Odeh from Ramallah, while White House Correspondent Kimberly Halkett joins live from Washington, DC.

Tariffs: The most beautiful word in the dictionary, as Donald Trump says, or unlawful?
The Supreme Court has ruled that the president cannot use emergency powers to impose them.
It's a significant check on his power and a major setback to his second-term agenda.
But despite the ruling, Trump has already found new ways to keep his trade barriers in place.
Tariffs remain central to his economic policy, both to boost US manufacturing and generate revenue.
The court may have disarmed one of Trump's trade weapons, but the turn towards protectionism is far from over.

Robert Kelley , former director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, joins Al Jazeera’s live from Vienna. He says the IAEA faces serious gaps in knowledge over Iran’s nuclear activities, but if inspectors had full access, they could accurately account for accessible nuclear materials within a few months. He emphasises that the agency’s role is verification, not determining whether Iran’s program is peaceful.

Iraq is in political deadlock. It still has no government, though general elections were held in November. At the heart of the crisis is the former prime minister, Nouri Al Maliki, who was picked by the majority coalition in parliament as its candidate to take over the role again. But that choice has been met with strong opposition from US President Donald Trump. And that warning has further polarised the political landscape in the country. So, what's really behind Washington's strong stance against Maliki? And what role does the US still play in Iraq?

The US military build-up around Iran is the biggest concentration of American firepower in the Middle East in decades.
Although talks are continuing, President Trump has warned a limited attack is still an option if Tehran doesn’t agree to a deal on its nuclear programme.
Any flare-up risks the closure of airspace and waterways, and disruptions to international travel.
Even a limited incident could spiral into a broader conflict, with potentially widespread fallout.

At one of Argentina’s largest tyre makers, workers found gates locked after the company shut, cutting about 900 jobs and blaming import competition following President Javier Milei’s policy changes.
