A 45-year-old man has reportedly been charged with assault, after he was filmed fighting high school students in Texas during a protest against immigration enforcement agency ICE.
Israel is severely restricting what Palestinians can bring into Gaza through the Rafah crossing, as its forces maintain a tight control over who is allowed in or out. Rafah’s reopening was supposed to alleviate 18 months of Israel’s punishing siege, but aid continues to be limited and thousands are still waiting to cross.
The Israel-Palestine director of Human Rights Watch (HRW) has resigned in protest, saying the organisation’s new chief blocked a report accusing Israel of committing “crimes against humanity” in its denial of Palestinian refugees’ right of return.
Omar Shakir, who has worked for the rights group for more than 10 years, told Al Jazeera on Tuesday that the report “sought to connect the erasure of camps in Gaza with the emptying of camps in the West Bank, with the full assault led by the Israeli government against UNRWA, the [United Nations] aid agency for Palestinian refugees and underscoring how in the midst of this Nakba 2.0 that we’re seeing unfold beyond us, it’s critical that we learn the lessons from Nakba 1.0”.
Omar Shakir is live from Amman, Jordan to speak more about this.

US funding cuts threaten African research as scientists and researchers from the United States and Africa meet in Senegal to discuss the future of innovation on the continent. Since 2025, nearly three billion dollars in research funding has been cut or frozen under President Donald Trump, with public health, vaccine research and climate science particularly affected. African scientists say projects have been derailed, including cutting-edge work turning peanut shells into batteries. As US focus shifts to rare earth minerals, funding for research by Africans, for Africans, is stalling.

Israel has killed at least 20 Palestinians in a major escalation across Gaza on Wednesday, violating the US-brokered ceasefire.
strikes and artillery shelling have hit Gaza City, Khan Yunis, and al-Mawasi, making movement extremely dangerous.
A Palestinian Red Crescent medic was killed while evacuating the wounded, highlighting the risks to emergency crews.
Medical evacuations remain severely limited, with Israel briefly halting coordination for Palestinian patients at Rafah crossing.
The suspension was blamed on missing WHO data, though coordination resumed later in the day.
Israeli authorities claim the attacks respond to an incident injuring an Israeli officer, though evidence is limited.
Airstrikes continue in eastern Gaza City, including Tuffah and Zeitoun neighbourhoods, adding to mounting casualties.
Tensions remain high as drones and fighter jets patrol the skies, signalling further potential attacks.

Tensions are escalating in Ethiopia's Tigray region following a weekend drone strike that killed civilians, with the regional government accusing the national army of carrying out the attack. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed addressed parliament, blaming the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) for ongoing problems whilst highlighting the presence of Eritrean forces in Tigray, which he accused of committing mass atrocities. Internal divisions within the TPLF and fears of renewed conflict have prompted some residents to flee, as communities still recovering from a war that killed over 100,000 people call for de-escalation.

The Syrian army has entered the northeastern city of Qamishli, one of the last strongholds of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces. It's part of a ceasefire deal and an agreement that's meant to see the SDF integrate into the Syrian army. A large convoy of trucks was seen entering the city. A daytime curfew was declared, which authorities say is needed to 'maintain order during the transition.' Syrian government forces have established control over most of the country in the past few weeks.
