The tanker, identified as Sili City, crossed the Arabian Sea under heavy military Escort and entered Iranian waters overnight. Another tanker. Another seizure. And the clock on diplomacy is ticking down. The United States Navy has struck again—boarding and seizing an Iran-linked oil tanker deep in the Indian Ocean, signaling a widening enforcement zone beyond traditional hotspots. The vessel, identified as the M/T Tifani, was intercepted in international waters between Sri Lanka and Indonesia, far from the Persian Gulf’s usual flashpoints.

According to the Pentagon, the operation was a “right-of-visit maritime interdiction,” executed without resistance. The tanker—capable of carrying nearly two million barrels of crude—was boarded overnight on April 21. U.S. officials say the ship is tied to Iran’s so-called “dark fleet,” a network accused of covert ship-to-ship transfers designed to evade sanctions and sustain oil exports.

This move follows a similar high-stakes operation just days earlier, when U.S. forces seized the MV Touska near the Strait of Hormuz after disabling it with warning fire. Two seizures in two strategic regions underscore a clear escalation.

Japan has approved scrapping most restrictions on overseas arms sales, paving the way for warships, tanks and missiles to be exported.
Tokyo says this will strengthen the country's defence and deter potential threats from regional powers.
But Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's government emphasised the country will continue to uphold the principles of a peace-loving nation.

Iran conflict has exposed the true scale of damage to US forces, with the Pentagon confirming that 415 American troops have been wounded in Operation Epic Fury. The injuries come after sustained Iranian drone and missile strikes targeting multiple US bases across the Gulf region.

Wismar (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) – Der Kampf um Timmys Leben geht weiter! Am Montag hatte er sich zunächst freigeschwommen, war nach einem Zickzack-Kurs dann aber wieder auf einer Sandbank gestrandet. Inzwischen ist der Wasserpegel dramatisch gesunken – eine gefährliche Situation für den Wal.

Ein Bagger mit Saugaufsatz trägt die Sandbank rund um den Wal ab, während Helfer im Wasser den Einsatz koordinieren. Mit Hochdruck wird Sand weggespült – Ziel ist es, Timmy wieder freizubekommen.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari held his weekly press briefing in Doha, announcing that the Amir had received Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif last Thursday and expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s role in de-escalating tensions and promoting peace in the region.
Al-Ansari said Qatar is “supporting fully the efforts of our brothers in Pakistan” to mediate between the United States and Iran, noting ongoing contacts with all parties involved. He stressed that Qatar views mediation not as a “media show” but as an “effective role” aimed at advancing political solutions.
On the Strait of Hormuz, he warned that any disruption “will transfer this crisis to the international world,” affecting global energy markets as well as electricity and heating supplies. He said Qatar remains committed to its energy partners and can be “trusted very well throughout history.”
He confirmed continued direct contacts with Iran, including a recent call between the Prime Minister and the Iranian foreign minister, urging restraint and a return to peaceful dialogue.
On the ceasefire, al-Ansari said contingency plans are in place for Qatar’s national defence, with armed forces remaining on alert, while diplomatic efforts continue with all parties to extend the ceasefire or end hostilities.
He also condemned Israeli attacks on Lebanon, reaffirming Qatar’s support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and unity, and said both sides participated seriously in the first round of talks in Islamabad, while noting that contradictory reports are being closely monitored with concern.

For weeks, a US-Israel war on Iran pushed the Gulf to the brink. But the real battleground wasn’t in the air. It was the Strait of Hormuz. This narrow chokepoint, connecting the Gulf to global shipping routes, carries about 20 million barrels of oil a day, nearly a fifth of global supply, making it critical to the global economy, energy markets, and supply chains.

As tensions escalated, Iran did not fully close the strait. Instead, it reshaped it into a system of control, using drones, naval threats, and uncertainty to disrupt shipping. Traffic dropped, oil prices surged, and global trade slowed, affecting Asia, Europe, and beyond. Some vessels were allowed through, others blocked, and some reportedly paid transit fees, turning Hormuz into a strategic “toll system”.

US President Donald Trump responded with a naval blockade, escalating a geopolitical standoff, as ceasefire talks in Islamabad failed. The situation remains uncertain: Partial reopening, conditional access, and conflicting claims highlight a new reality.

Istanbul, Türkei – Es sollte eine unbeschwerte Reise werden – doch für eine Familie aus Hamburg endete der Urlaub tödlich. Fünf Monate nach dem dramatischen Vierfach-Tod beginnt heute Vormittag in Istanbul der Prozess gegen sechs Angeklagte.

Servet (38), seine Frau Çiğdem (27) und ihre beiden Kinder Masal (3) und Kadir (6) waren im November vergangenen Jahres in die türkische Metropole gereist.

Im Fokus steht eine Schädlingsbekämpfung mit Aluminiumphosphid – einer Chemikalie, die laut Anklage gar nicht zur Bekämpfung von Bettwanzen geeignet ist. Zudem soll die verantwortliche Firma ohne notwendige Genehmigungen gearbeitet und Sicherheitsvorschriften missachtet haben. Experten gehen davon aus, dass das tödliche Gas vermutlich über einen Lüftungsschacht ins Zimmer der Familie gelangte.

Vor Gericht müssen sich nun der Hotelbesitzer, ein Rezeptionist sowie der Inhaber der Schädlingsbekämpfungsfirma, dessen Sohn und ein Mitarbeiter verantworten. Alle fünf sitzen in Untersuchungshaft. Ein weiterer Hotelangestellter ist ebenfalls angeklagt.

Die Staatsanwaltschaft wirft den fünf Angeklagten „bewusste fahrlässige Tötung“ vor. Ihnen drohen Haftstrafen von bis zu 22,5 Jahren. Einem weiteren Hotelmitarbeiter wird „fahrlässige Tötung“ vorgeworfen – hier stehen bis zu 15 Jahre im Raum. Alle Beschuldigten weisen die Vorwürfe bislang zurück.

As a second round of Israel–Lebanon talks is expected on Thursday, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has issued strong threats against Hezbollah, warning leader Naim Qasem he “will pay the price with his head,” while also cautioning the Lebanese government it will “pay a heavy price” if it fails to disarm the group.
Speaking during Israel’s Memorial Day commemorations, Katz said he and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had instructed the army to continue operations in southern Lebanon against any threats, projecting a message of strength and defiance.
The remarks come as Israel faces domestic pressure and unpopularity after being compelled to observe ceasefires linked to President Donald Trump’s announcements on Iran and Lebanon.
While Israeli officials have insisted the two fronts remain separate, they are now seeking to rally support among communities in northern Israel.
At the same time, officials are viewing the upcoming Islamabad talks with scepticism, signalling expectations of failure and indicating readiness to resume strikes in both Iran and Lebanon.

As the two-week ceasefire deadline between Iran and the United States approaches, tensions remain high ahead of expected talks in Islamabad, despite indications both sides may still pursue diplomacy.
Mohamad Elmasry, professor at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, told Al Jazeera the situation is “very precarious”, saying Washington “miscalculated” by declaring victory after Iran opened the Strait of Hormuz instead of also de-escalating, making negotiations more difficult following the US seizure of an Iranian cargo ship.
He said neither side has an appetite for renewed war but both are seeking an “off ramp”, warning positions have hardened, with the IRGC gaining greater influence during wartime. Elmasry added Iran may compromise on some of its demands but “won’t surrender all of them”.
Nilofer Afridi Qazi, a public policy specialist, told Al Jazeera from Islamabad that Pakistan is working “25-7” to move the dialogue forward, with expectations both sides will attend a second round of talks.
Elmasry described Pakistan as a “perfect mediator” due to its ties with both sides, helping bridge a “fundamental lack of trust”.
Qazi said mixed messaging is not unique to Iran, pointing to multiple centres of power globally and highlighting the “elephant in the room” — Israel’s influence on US decision-making — which she warned could undermine the peace process.
Both guests said talks are likely, but cautioned progress will be difficult amid rising tensions, hardened positions and deep mistrust.
