Let's start with the bigger of the two incidents. March 12th, 2026. The USS Gerald R. Ford — America's most advanced aircraft carrier, a $13 billion warship — is operating in the Red Sea. A fire breaks out in the ship's main laundry facilities. Now before you think — laundry room, how bad could it be — here's the answer. Bad. Really bad.

It took 30 hours to extinguish. Thirty hours of sailors fighting fire aboard a vessel packed with jet fuel, munitions, and aviation systems. Over 200 sailors needed medical attention for smoke inhalation. More than 600 were displaced from their sleeping quarters — their bunks destroyed or rendered uninhabitable by smoke and water damage.

Lebanon's Aoun defends Israel talks

Lebanon’s President, Joseph Aoun, has stressed that his country makes decisions for itself and that his government is pushing forward only the interests of the Lebanese people.

Aoun defended Beirut’s decision to enter into direct talks with Israel days after the Israeli military killed hundreds of people throughout the country.

“These negotiations are not weakness. They are not a retreat. They are not a concession. They are a decision stemming from the strength in our belief in our rights and care for our people and our responsibility to protect our country by all means possible,” he said in a televised address.

Al Jazeera’s Malcolm Webb joins live from Beirut, and Ali Hashem is live in the Iranian capital.

Weniger als 24 Stunden nach Inkrafttreten der Waffenruhe zwischen Israel und dem Libanon gibt es bereits neue Spannungen. Die libanesische Armee wirft Israel Verstöße gegen das Abkommen vor, während das israelische Militär die Bevölkerung davor warnt, in den Süden des Landes zurückzukehren.

Dennoch kehren viele Vertriebene in die südlichen Vororte Beiruts heim – trotz anhaltender Unsicherheit. Vor Ort zeigt sich eine angespannte Stimmung: Während einige Bewohner ihre Rückkehr feiern, betonen andere, dass der Konflikt noch nicht beendet sei.

Bundeskanzler Friedrich Merz hat am Freitag in Paris seine Bereitschaft bekräftigt, Deutschland an einem Militäreinsatz zur Sicherung der Straße von Hormus zu beteiligen. In einem abschließenden Pressestatement, das auf Beratungen mit europäischen Staats- und Regierungschefs folgte, nannte Merz als mögliche Beiträge die Minenräumung sowie die Seeaufklärung. Zudem bezeichnete er eine Beteiligung der USA an der Hormus-Mission als "wünschenswert".

Ein deutsches Engagement soll sich auf diese technischen Kernbereiche konzentrieren. Als Bedingungen nannte der Kanzler jedoch einen anhaltenden Waffenstillstand, eine UN-Resolution sowie die Zustimmung des Bundestages. Unter den europäischen Partnern herrscht indes weiterhin Uneinigkeit über die Führung der Mission, insbesondere hinsichtlich der US-Rolle. Gleichzeitig verschärfte der Kanzler den Ton gegenüber Teheran: Er forderte ein definitives Ende des iranischen Atomprogramms sowie die Einstellung aller Angriffe auf Israel und die Golfstaaten.

Am Freitag hat der Deutsche Bundestag in Berlin über einen Antrag der Fraktion Bündnis 90/Die Grünen zur Bekämpfung der sogenannten russischen "Schattenflotte" debattiert. Der Abgeordnete Robin Wagener forderte darin verstärkte Kontrollen durch die Bundespolizei, den Zoll und die Marine, um die Tanker bei Bedarf vor deutschen Küsten festzusetzen. Ziel der Initiative seien der Umweltschutz sowie die Unterbindung der Sanktionsumgehung und der Kriegsfinanzierung Russlands.

Widerspruch kam von Sören Pellmann für Die Linke, der vor militärischen Eskalationen warnte und das Vorhaben völkerrechtlich kritisierte. Die AfD bezeichnete die Flotte als Folge der Sanktionspolitik und warnte vor wirtschaftlichen Schäden durch weitere Eingriffe gegen Russland. Für die SPD eröffnete Helge Lindh seine Rede mit einem Angriff, indem er die AfD selbst als "Schattenflotte Russlands" im Parlament bezeichnete. Eine Zwischenfrage von Markus Frohnmaier zum Umgang mit Machthabern wie al-Dscholani wies Lindh als "billigen Whataboutism" zurück.

Roosevelt-Preis: Selenskij erhält Auszeichnung für Freiheiten, die er abgeschafft hat

Der Regierungschef Wladimir Selenskij und das Volk der Ukraine sind am Donnerstag in den Niederlanden mit dem "Four Freedoms Award" ausgezeichnet worden.

Diese Auszeichnung wird jährlich an Personen verliehen, die sich um die vier Freiheitsrechte verdient gemacht haben, die US-Präsident Roosevelt 1941 formuliert hat: Meinungsfreiheit, Religionsfreiheit, Freiheit von Not und Freiheit von Furcht.

Unter Selenskijs Herrschaft wurden jedoch unter anderem durch das Verbot oppositioneller Parteien und Medien sowie der Ukrainisch-Orthodoxen Kirche mehrere dieser Freiheiten in der Ukraine abgeschafft. Männer müssen jederzeit damit rechnen, von "Rekrutierungsbeamten" festgenommen, an die Front gebracht und zum Kriegsdienst gezwungen zu werden.

Am Donnerstag ging die dreitägige Amtsreise von Wladimir Selenskij, in der er Deutschland, Norwegen, Italien und die Niederlande besuchte, zu Ende.

Sojus-2.1b-Rakete bringt russische Militärsatelliten ins All

Im Gebiet Archangelsk wurde vom Kosmodrom Plesetsk aus erfolgreich eine Weltraumrakete gestartet. Am 17. April um 2:17 Uhr morgens schoss die Trägerrakete "Sojus 2.1b" mit Satelliten des russischen Verteidigungsministeriums an Bord in die Höhe. Diese wurden erfolgreich in die vorgesehene Umlaufbahn gebracht.

Wie bei solchen Starts üblich, erhellte eine helle Raketenspur den Nachthimmel. Besonders gut war die sogenannte "Weltraumqualle" für die Einwohner von Sankt Petersburg zu sehen.

Der Wall Street Journal-Chefkorrespondent für europäische Politik, Bojan Pancevski, der seit 2014 aus der Ukraine berichtet, war jüngst in der Talkshow von Markus Lanz zu Besuch. Das Thema waren Pancevskis Recherchen zum Nord-Stream-Anschlag im September 2022.

Nachdem Lanz den Experten fragte, ob die damalige ukrainische Führung wusste, dass es diese "[Anschlags-]Pläne geben könnte", bestätigte Pancevski, dass sowohl der damalige Befehlshaber der Streitkräfte Saluschny, als auch das Staatsoberhaupt Selenskij über die "internationalen" Pläne zur Zerstörung von Nord Stream gewusst haben und diese sogar "genehmigten".

Der Autor von "Die Nord-Stream-Sprengung. Die wahre Geschichte der Sabotage, die Europa erschütterte" (2026) merkte jedoch an, dass die ukrainische Seite diese Behauptungen bis heute von sich weist.

Am Donnerstag hat der Deutsche Bundestag über einen Antrag der AfD debattiert, das Tragen von Kopftüchern bei Mädchen unter 14 Jahren in Bildungseinrichtungen gesetzlich zu verbieten. Die Abgeordnete Kerstin Przygodda bezeichnete das Kinderkopftuch in ihrer Rede als Ausdruck von Zwang sowie als "sexuelles Symbol, Fahne des politischen Islams, Zeichen der Unterdrückung der Frau" und als Mittel, um "patriarchale Machtansprüche zu zementieren".

Dem hielt Lamya Kaddor von den Grünen entgegen, dass Verbote keinen Sinn ergeben, da das Problem lediglich im Privaten bleiben würde. Unter Verweis auf ihren Hintergrund als Islamwissenschaftlerin, Religionspädagogin, Mutter und Muslimin, die selbst kein Kopftuch trage, nahm sie in der Thematik die Deutungshoheit für sich in Anspruch. Sie gab an, dass zwar "keinerlei theologische Grundlage" für ein Kinderkopftuch existiere, stufte das Thema jedoch als Phänomen einer "Minderheit der Minderheiten" ein. Kaddor setzte auf mehr spezialisierte Pädagogen und will ein "vielfältiges progressives muslimisches Leben" fördern – was laut Kaddor im Übrigen für alle Religionen gelten müsse.

Am 14. April unterzeichneten die Ukraine und Deutschland während des Besuchs des ukrainischen Präsidenten Wladimir Selenskij in Berlin zehn Abkommen über Zusammenarbeit. Wie der ukrainische Verteidigungsminister Michail Fedorow präzisierte, beläuft sich das Gesamtvolumen der Vereinbarungen auf schätzungsweise vier Milliarden Euro. Die Abkommen zielen auf die Stärkung der Luftabwehr, die Entwicklung eines Systems für Tiefschlagangriffe und die Produktion von Drohnen ab.

Berlin wird 300 Millionen Euro für die Entwicklung von Systemen mit großer Reichweite bereitstellen. Außerdem ist der Start einer gemeinsamen Produktion von 5.000 Drohnen unter Einsatz von künstlicher Intelligenz geplant.
