Police in Ukraine have shot dead a gunman who opened fire on civilians in the capital, Kyiv, killing at least six people and injuring ten others, including a child.

The attacker reportedly began shooting in a residential area before moving into a supermarket, where he continued firing and briefly took hostages.

Die Rettungsaktion für Timmy wird am Sonntag fortgesetzt. Dabei soll nach BILD-Informationen der Buckelwal die Ponton-Konstruktion zum ersten Mal sehen und damit vertraut gemacht werden. Der Wal soll mit Luftkissen angehoben, das Netz dann unter ihm durchgezogen und an Pontons befestigt werden. Zusätzlich sollen um die Flossen auf dem Netz Luftkissen für Auftrieb sorgen und verhindern, dass der Wal sich in den Maschen verfängt. Erste Spülarbeiten wurden bereits am Freitag durchgeführt. Es waren Tests, u.a. auch dazu, wie der Wal darauf reagiert.

Schwerlasttransporter haben das Equipment dafür bereits am Donnerstag ans Ufer der Bucht gebracht. Bauzäune und Polizei halten Schaulustige weiter fern. Doch BILD-Reporter sind vor Ort und berichten über das Wal-Drama. Der schwer kranke Timmy soll mit Luftkissen nach dem Verladen in die Nordsee oder sogar bis in den Atlantik geschleppt werden. Till Backhaus (67, SPD), Umweltminister von Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, sieht darin eine Chance für den Wal. Es wird wohl seine letzte Chance.

With the ceasefire in effect in Lebanon, thousands of people displaced by Israel's strikes and forced evacuation orders are going back to their homes.
But for many, the return has brought heartbreak rather than relief.
They have found devastation - destroyed homes, buildings and facilities.
The US-brokered truce, which came into effect on Friday, is set to last 10 days and is meant to open the door to more talks.

Yesterday, Iran opened one of the most important waterways on the planet. Today? They shut it back down. And they're blaming Donald Trump.

Twenty percent of the world's oil passes through one narrow strip of water. The Strait of Hormuz. And right now — it's closed. Again. Here's exactly what happened in the last 24 hours.

On Friday, April 17th, Iran made a move that surprised markets and governments worldwide. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that the Strait of Hormuz — which Iran had been restricting — would be fully reopened to commercial vessels and oil tankers. Tehran called it a good-faith gesture. A confidence-building step tied to the ongoing ceasefire connected to the Israel-Lebanon conflict.

Oil prices dropped. Shipping companies exhaled. Markets responded positively. And then — Trump posted. He called it a great development. The strait was, in his words, "fully open and ready for business and full passage." Everyone thought a corner had been turned.

Palestinian Prisoners' Day is observed every year on April the 17th to highlight the conditions of those held in Israeli jails.
The number of imprisoned Palestinians has doubled since Israel's war on Gaza began in October 2023.
More than 9,600 Palestinians are currently detained in Israel and the occupied West Bank.
The number of administrative detainees, those held without charge or trial, has risen to more than 3,500.
That's up from 1,300 before the war.
The number of children has exceeded 350 with about half of them held without trial or charge.
And since 2023, at least 89 Palestinians have died in Israeli detention, reportedly due to hunger, medical negligence, and torture.
Rights groups say this is part of a wider system of repression.
