Medellin has transformed from a city once synonymous with drug cartels into a hub of innovation and business, attracting significant US investment and trade. However, the longstanding partnership between Colombia and the United States now faces strain as Presidents Gustavo Petro and Donald Trump clash over migration, drug policy and regional politics. American businesses and Colombian startups report rising uncertainty, whilst billions in investment and decades of security cooperation hang in the balance. Colombia remains the world's largest cocaine producer, despite extensive joint efforts under Plan Colombia to combat trafficking.
Al Jazeera's Alessandra Ampudia reports from Medellin, Colombia.

A convoy of 150 Syrian soldiers has entered the city of Hasaka in northeastern Syria as part of a phased transfer of internal security duties from the Kurdish-led SDF to state authorities. The deployment follows an agreement signed last week under which the SDF will hand over territory, government offices, and oil and gas fields it has controlled since Syria's civil war. Whilst the Syrian government pledges to guarantee civil and political rights for Kurds, many remain apprehensive about coming under Damascus's control, with some factions within the SDF opposing the deal. The transfer was coordinated with the Asayesh, the SDF's internal police force, and officials say further areas will transition to government control in the coming days.

The latest release of evidence from the Jeffrey Epstein case has exposed more than 3 million pages of documents, including 2,000 videos and 180,000 images, implicating prominent global figures in their associations with the late convicted paedophile.
The materials reveal politically sensitive connections to Britain's former Duke of York, Norway's Crown Princess, Slovakia's national security adviser, and business leaders including Elon Musk, Richard Branson and Bill Gates.
US President Donald Trump, whose name appears thousands of times in the files, is threatening legal action against Epstein's estate and author Michael Wolff over claims he denies.
Survivors' advocates criticise the release for lacking transparency, whilst growing calls demand the disclosure of all 6 million pages collected by the Department of Justice.

It's the first day of the reopening of the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt after nearly two years.
So far only five patients have been able to leave the Strip to receive medical treatment abroad.
Even with Israel's limited reopening of the crossing, the expectation was that 50 patients would be allowed to exit the strip each day.

The Syrian army has moved into the city of Hasakah, formerly under the control of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
It’s the first step in the implementation of an integration deal between the army and the SDF.
Hasakah is located in northeastern Syria and has long been a stronghold of the SDF.
A large convoy of trucks was seen entering the city hours after the SDF declared a curfew there.
Under the agreement, Syrian government forces are also expected to enter the cities of Kobani and Qamishli.
The Syrian army has established control over most of the country in the past few weeks.

The Rafah border crossing has finally reopened after months of closure as a result of Israel's devastating war on the Strip.
Hopes were running high that the freedom of movement would ease the dire humanitarian crisis created by this war.
But Israel has set strict conditions on who would leave the Strip and who would enter.
Now, only a small number people are allowed to move in both directions.
But much-needed humanitarian aid and construction material are still barred from entering the Strip, which is in ruins.
Will this reopening ease the suffering of Palestinians after two years of war?

Spain's government will grant legal status to undocumented migrants currently living in the country. The decree, passed after years of grassroots campaigning, will potentially impact about 500,000 migrants and comes in stark contrast to the anti-immigration sentiment in other EU countries. Why has the Spanish government decided to embrace its migrant population now?

Gaza's Rafah crossing is reopening for the first time in nearly two years for Palestinians who need urgent medical care.
Ambulances and busses are taking patients and their family members from southern Gaza to the border with Egypt.
Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst, Marwan Bishara, says Rafah’s “100 days too late” reopening proves Israel still tightly controls Gaza and that Palestinians now face a prolonged “war by other means” shaped by US policy, Trump’s Gaza plan and Netanyahu’s election politics.

Palestinians in need of urgent medical care are set to leave Gaza through the Rafah crossing as it reopens for the first time in nearly two years.
Ambulances and buses are transferring patients and some of their family members from southern Gaza to the border with Egypt.
Israel is severely limiting the number of daily crossings to Palestinians with prior approval.
Only 50 patients with two family members a day will be allowed to cross.
But there are more than 20,000 patients waiting for treatment abroad.
For patients in Gaza whose injuries or illnesses cannot be treated locally, evacuation abroad can mean the difference between life and death.
But getting out takes time and it is tightly controlled.
Dr Mohammed Abu Salmiya, director of Gaza City’s al-Shifa Hospital, says there are 20,000 patients in the Palestinian territory, including 4,500 children, in urgent need of medical evacuation.

Foreign students are gradually returning to Damascus to study Arabic after more than a decade of absence caused by Syria's civil war. Before 2011, the capital hosted hundreds of international learners annually through universities and institutes, but the conflict forced a complete halt. The University of Damascus, which once ran exchange programmes with Western institutions, currently has no international students enrolled in its Arabic programme, though officials say they are ready to welcome learners again. Students from Malaysia and other countries now attending private institutes say they are drawn by immersive teaching and Syria's cultural heritage, whilst local students express hope that Damascus can rebuild its reputation as a centre for Arabic learning.

Vietnam's economy is navigating a sharp rise in tariffs whilst pivoting towards tourism and services to sustain growth.
The country's textile industry, employing millions since the post-war era, now faces a combined 37 per cent tariff increase that manufacturers compare to the pandemic's economic shock.
Yet tourism has grown 8 per cent in 2025, with overseas visitors up more than 20 per cent, helping offset manufacturing pressures. The government is targeting 10 per cent growth in 2026, banking on resilience built through decades of economic pragmatism and integration into global supply chains.

Patients in Gaza who cannot be treated locally must undergo a lengthy, tightly controlled process to be evacuated abroad, often determining life or death.
Doctors submit cases through hospitals to a central referral committee, with approvals coordinated by the World Health Organization.
Final clearance is required from Israel, before evacuations can take place.
Many patients died while waiting, including three-year-old Ibtisam Abu Ameera, whose papers were approved only days before her death.
Since the Rafah crossing closed, at least 1,268 Palestinians have died awaiting medical evacuation, while around 20,000 remain on waiting lists.
Israel says it will allow 50 patients a day to leave, a pace that could take more than a year to clear the backlog.
Although Rafah is reopening, limited numbers mean many critically ill patients may still be left behind.

As tensions rise between Washington and Tehran, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has warned that a US attack could trigger a regional war. This comes as Donald Trump says he hopes for a deal, even while US military assets are positioned in the region and backchannel diplomacy continues.
Al Jazeera spoke to Trita Parsi, executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, about the risks and possible off-ramps.
Parsi says behind-the-scenes talks are underway, led by regional states including Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, Oman and Saudi Arabia, all seeking to prevent war. He argues most countries in the region believe a US–Iran conflict would be devastating and deeply destabilising, with no quick or clean victory for Washington. Parsi says the most effective path to de-escalation would be direct contact between Iran and Trump, even without formal negotiations. He believes Iran’s warnings of a regional war are credible and aimed primarily at Trump, as the White House may be overestimating Iran’s weakness and pursuing unrealistic demands. Parsi adds that Tehran calculates a limited but forceful response could shatter expectations of an easy US win, though he warns this strategy carries grave risks and could spiral into a prolonged war. Ultimately, he says diplomacy remains possible if Iran chooses to engage directly before the situation is tested militarily.

The Syrian government is preparing to enter Kurdish-controlled areas in the northeast following an agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to integrate its fighters into the army.
Under the deal, the SDF will remain in place whilst the state assumes control of territory, borders and detention facilities holding ISIL fighters and their families.
Residents express mixed feelings – some hope for peace and stability, whilst Kurds fear what the government's presence will mean.
Thousands of ISIL (ISIS) detainees remain in Syrian prisons, with the US transferring only a few hundred to Iraq so far.

United States plans for Gaza amount to a “theme park of dispossession” for Palestinians, argues Drop Site News Middle East Editor Sharif Abdel Kouddous.
Abdel Kouddous tells host Steve Clemons the draconian measures planned for the two million shell-shocked Palestinians in Gaza are an Orwellian labyrinth of biometrics, bureaucracy and “a lab for government surveillance” – all meant to drive them out.
Noting that Israel hasn’t “gone past phase one” of any ceasefire agreement with an Arab country, Abdel Kouddous warns that Israel is establishing facts on the ground in Gaza – including 50 military bases – “which eventually become permanent”.

He has been battling prostate cancer for four years.
Abed was scheduled to have an operation on October 10th, 2023, but three days before that Israel launched its war, postponing his urgently needed treatment.
Abedel and his family have suffered immense losses throughout Israel's genocidal war.
His 28-year-old daughter, Shaima, her entire family, along with her two children and husband were killed in an Israeli air strike hitting their apartment in Gaza City. That's a month after the war began.
