Hundreds of far-right “Britain First” supporters marched in the streets of Manchester to celebrate Saint George, seemingly not realising the patron saint of England has a special connection to Palestine. Al Jazeera’s Nils Adler and Nida Ibrahim explain.
North Korea has carried out another missile launch into its eastern waters, marking its seventh test this year and fourth in just one month. The move violates UN Security Council resolutions, but leader Kim Jong-un says the program is necessary for national defense.
Experts warn that global tensions — including the Iran crisis — are reinforcing Pyongyang’s belief that nuclear weapons ensure regime survival. Neighboring South Korea faces growing risks, with fears that missile barrages could overwhelm defense systems and threaten major cities.
Despite heavy sanctions, analysts say North Korea’s willingness to endure economic hardship limits international leverage, raising concerns about future escalation and regional security.

Pope Leo XIV has arrived in Angola as part of his multi-nation Africa tour, which has already included visits to Algeria and Cameroon.
While the visit focuses on diplomacy, peacebuilding, and interfaith dialogue, the tour has been overshadowed by a growing political dispute with U.S. President Donald Trump over the Middle East conflict.
The comments have added a geopolitical dimension to what was intended as a pastoral and diplomatic journey across Africa.

Protesters and police clashed in the streets of India’s Manipur on Saturday night amid a growing wave of demonstrations in the state after a reported bombing that killed two children earlier in April.
Hundreds of protesters returned to the streets of Tel Aviv demanding an independent investigation into the Israeli government’s handling of the October 7, 2023 attacks carried out by Hamas.
Demonstrators are calling for a state commission of inquiry, accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of avoiding accountability while leading the country through ongoing conflict.
The government has rejected calls for a formal inquiry, citing concerns over judicial bias, further intensifying political tensions in Israel.
Families of victims say they still deserve answers about the failures before and after the attack.

The war may have paused, but tensions in the Strait of Hormuz are far from over.
Iran has reimposed strict controls on shipping, citing the ongoing us blockade of its ports. Despite a fragile ceasefire, both sides continue to exert pressure not through airstrikes, but through control of one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is deploying fast attack boats, using swarm tactics to monitor and confront vessels. Reports indicate commercial ships have come under fire, raising fears of escalation.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump insists the blockade will remain until a final deal is reached, even as diplomatic uncertainty continues.
With nearly 20% of global oil passing through this route, the stakes for the global economy remain extremely high.

Tensions between the United States and Iran are escalating again as the Strait of Hormuz turns into a flashpoint.
Iranian forces have reportedly fired at commercial vessels and forced ships to turn back, effectively shutting down one of the world’s most critical energy routes. This comes just hours after Iran had briefly reopened the strait.
Tehran says the move is a response to the ongoing US blockade of Iranian ports — while Donald Trump insists Washington will not be “blackmailed.”

The world is reckoning with the biggest oil supply disruption in history, one that has sent energy prices soaring, rattled stock markets and exposed the deep vulnerabilities of economies still hooked on fossil fuels. While millions face higher fuel and energy bills, top oil and gas companies are reportedly profiting about $30m per hour since the war began.
This week on UpFront, Redi Tlhabi speaks with renowned economist Mariana Mazzucato about what a genuine green industrial strategy looks like, why the World Bank has fallen short, and how her concept of the "common good economy" offers a new compass for governments navigating crises.

Palestinian Prisoners' Day is observed every year on April the 17th to highlight the conditions of those held in Israeli jails.
The number of imprisoned Palestinians has doubled since Israel's war on Gaza began in October 2023.
More than 9,600 Palestinians are currently detained in Israel and the occupied West Bank.
The number of administrative detainees, those held without charge or trial, has risen to more than 3,500.
That's up from 1,300 before the war.
The number of children has exceeded 350 with about half of them held without trial or charge.
And since 2023, at least 89 Palestinians have died in Israeli detention, reportedly due to hunger, medical negligence, and torture.
Rights groups say this is part of a wider system of repression.
Al Jazeera’s Dalya Al Masri reports.

Iran has announced it is closing the Strait of Hormuz again less than 24 hours after declaring the waterway open.
It says the United States must lift its blockade of Iranian ports before marine traffic can flow freely.
The tension has placed a chokehold on the global economy, heavily restricting the movement of energy supplies worldwide.
Al Jazeera’s Tohid Asadi has the latest from Tehran.
