Hungary turns the page: Peter Magyar promises EU reset after victory

13. April 2026 um 23:49

Hungary’s prime minister-elect Peter Magyar has pledged sweeping reforms after securing a landslide victory in parliamentary elections, ending years of dominance by Viktor Orban.

Magyar says his top priorities include tackling corruption, overhauling governance, and restoring strained ties with the European Union.

A key goal is unlocking billions in frozen EU funds, which were withheld over concerns about democratic backsliding under Orban’s leadership.

European leaders have welcomed the result, including Friedrich Merz, who described it as a strong signal for democracy. Meanwhile, Donald Trump—who had backed Orban—has yet to comment publicly.

Russia is also watching closely, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov saying future relations will depend on Hungary’s new leadership.

Magyar now faces major challenges, including entrenched officials appointed under Orban who may resist reforms.

Trump Refuses to Apologize to Pope Leo After Social Media Controversy

13. April 2026 um 23:16

U.S. President Donald Trump has refused to apologize after criticizing Pope Leo, the head of the Catholic Church, over his stance on the war in Iran.

The controversy intensified after Trump shared an AI-generated image portraying himself as Jesus, before later deleting it and claiming he believed it depicted him as a doctor.

The dispute comes as Pope Leo continues to call for peace, urging global leaders to prioritize dialogue over conflict. Speaking during a mass and ahead of a tour across Africa, the pope emphasized reconciliation and said he has “no fear” of the Trump administration.

Despite backlash, Trump doubled down on his criticism, saying he has “nothing to apologize for.”

The clash highlights growing tensions between political leadership and religious voices on issues of war, diplomacy, and global peace.

US enforces Iran blockade as nuclear deal collapses

13. April 2026 um 22:48

US President Donald Trump has announced a military blockade of Iranian ports, following the collapse of nuclear negotiations with Iran.

Talks held in Pakistan ended without a breakthrough, with the key dispute centered on Iran’s nuclear program. Despite this, Trump says communication is ongoing and a deal may still be possible.

The blockade is being enforced in the critical Strait of Hormuz, a major global oil route. The U.S. aims to cut off Iran’s energy exports and increase economic pressure, potentially impacting countries like China that rely on Iranian oil.
Al Jazeera's Alan Fisher reports from Washington.

Red lines and realities: Why the US-Iran peace talks in Islamabad collapsed | This is America

13. April 2026 um 20:05

In this episode of This is America, hosted by Anna Burns‑Francis, Al Jazeera examines why high‑level US–Iran peace talks in Islamabad collapsed after 21 hours, and how rival red lines over nuclear power, regional influence and control of the Strait of Hormuz now threaten a fragile ceasefire. From our Washington, DC bureau to the White House, the programme asks what a global superpower is really showing the world about consistency and stability as US negotiators return home empty‑handed and President Donald Trump responds by ordering a naval blockade on Iran’s main energy lifeline.

We break down the clash at the negotiating table in Pakistan. On the US side, Vice President JD Vance insists Iran “has chosen not to accept our terms”. Washington’s priorities are clear: a permanent ban on Iranian nuclear weapons, the elimination or export of enriched uranium, an end to uranium enrichment inside Iran, guaranteed freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, curbs on ballistic missiles and a halt to support for armed groups across the region. Across the table, Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf says Tehran brings “goodwill and intent” but “does not trust the other side” after two recent wars, and will not surrender what it sees as sovereign rights – including enrichment for civilian use, non‑negotiable missile capabilities, sanctions relief and effective control over Hormuz.

From the White House, Alan Fisher explains how Trump’s “all or none” blockade aims to stop Iran charging tolls or taking untraceable cryptocurrency payments from ships, throttle its access to hard currency, and use the strait – once the route for 20 percent of global oil trade – to strip away Iran’s key source of leverage. We examine how this strategy fits a long‑running pattern: a high‑pressure, deadline‑driven style rooted in New York real estate and echoes of the “madman theory”, from threats to “end a civilisation” to warnings of “lethal prosecution and destruction” if no “real agreement” is reached before the ceasefire runs out in nine days.

In the studio, former US Ambassador and Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman and former senior CIA analyst John Nixon join Anna Burns‑Francis to assess how far apart the two sides remain and why the talks were always unlikely to solve decades‑old disputes in less than a day. They explore the diplomatic puzzle of reconciling a US demand for zero enrichment with Iran’s insistence on its nuclear “rights”, the gap between US claims of having “obliterated” Iran’s military capacity and the reality that missiles and nuclear know‑how can be rebuilt, and whether Tehran’s time‑buying tactics – haggling to the last minute and trying to exhaust its opponent – are again paying off.

Heidi Zhou‑Castro charts the domestic fallout, from gloomy “no deal” headlines that hit before Vance landed back in Washington to partisan TV interviews framing the US–Iran war as either necessary pressure or an unauthorised, strategy‑free conflict. She reports on growing concern that a “blockade of a blockade” could drag in more countries, rattle global energy markets and push fuel prices higher for American households.

Finally, Alex Baird rounds out the programme with the online battle over what happens next – tracking how a now‑deleted Christlike image of the president, conspiracy‑minded calls for him to “wake up” and make a different deal with Iran, and conservative praise for a supposed “reverse UNO card” collide with criticism of Trump’s weekend at a UFC fight and warnings that maximalist demands could lock both sides into a prolonged test of endurance.

This is America asks whether there is still room to renegotiate each side’s “non‑negotiables” – or whether the red lines drawn in Islamabad and on the waters of Hormuz are now too deep to erase.

The war on Iran deepens Cambodia's debt crisis as fuel prices soar

13. April 2026 um 13:02

Cambodia's debt crisis deepens as the US-Israeli war on Iran drives up fuel costs.
Soaring diesel prices are worsening financial pressures on families already struggling with microloans charging up to 5 percent monthly interest.
Nearly 3.1 million of Cambodia's 3.8 million households hold microfinance debt totalling more than $18bn.
Farmers preparing to plant new crops face doubled fuel prices, forcing many to sell land or livestock. Rights groups warn that predatory lending practices and inflation are trapping vulnerable communities in an inescapable cycle of debt.

Al Jazeera's Barnaby Lo reports from Kampong Chhnang, Cambodia.

Lebanon seeks pause in fighting before talks with Israel: Culture Minister

13. April 2026 um 12:49

Lebanon and Israel are set to hold a preparatory meeting in Washington on Tuesday, with Lebanon's government saying the focus will be on ending the attacks.
Speaking to Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr, Lebanon's Culture Minister Ghassan Salame said the meeting aims to produce "a pause, if not a ceasefire, in military activity so that the shelling stops and we can talk with some kind of serenity about what negotiations should look like."
Salame acknowledged that Lebanon has "not much leverage" as the country has seen "a retreat of the state in the past 20, 30 years," with the government now trying to reassert state authority.
On Israel's insistence on the immediate disarmament of Hezbollah, Salame — who has mediated conflicts around the world — said: "I have never seen a disarmament process taking place in a few days or a few hours.
This is a process that takes time — look at Central America, look at Southeast Asia."
When Asked about US guarantees for a reduction in violence, he said "guarantees is probably too big a word, too committal a word," but confirmed there has been "a promise, some kind of commitment that there should be a de-escalation," which residents of Beirut and its suburbs have noticed in recent days.

Can the US really block Iran’s ports? Experts analyse Trump's threats

13. April 2026 um 12:13

The US has threatened to block Iran's ports as tensions escalate in the Gulf. Experts debate whether such a blockade is feasible and how Iran might respond, with the IRGC warning that Gulf ports should be accessible to all or none. The move aims to choke Iran's oil exports and economy, but analysts caution that enforcing a blockade could risk environmental disaster and draw the region closer to conflict. Meanwhile, European leaders are considering post-conflict maritime security roles, and diplomatic efforts continue despite the collapse of recent talks in Islamabad.

Iran's military warns 'security for all or none' as US naval blockade threat looms

13. April 2026 um 10:41

Iran's Joint Military Headquarters has issued a strong message that in case of any security threat, "it is going to be either for all or for none," adding that vessels affiliated with the enemy have "no right" to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, with tough repercussions promised if they approach.
The new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, has announced a "new management" over the strait as Iran seeks to use the waterway as a strategic leverage point, including plans to impose transit fees on ships.
Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a social media post that talks in Pakistan were the "most extensive at the highest level in 47 years," with Iran engaging in good faith, but when the parties were "inches away from a memorandum of understanding," Iran encountered "maximalism, shifting goalposts and blockade," concluding "zero lessons were learned."
Several sticking points remain, including Iran's nuclear dossier and its highly enriched uranium stockpile, the status of the Strait of Hormuz, a ceasefire on the Lebanese front, security assurances, Iran's ballistic missile programme, sanctions relief and frozen assets.

Global Sumud Flotilla heads from Barcelona to Gaza as mission grows

13. April 2026 um 09:36

A group of 39 boats known as the Global Sumud Flotilla has set sail from Barcelona to deliver aid to Gaza, with organisers saying more vessels are expected to join along the route, making it their largest mission so far.
Israeli forces intercepted and detained crew from a similar flotilla last year, but organisers say rough sea conditions mean the journey will be slower this time, with the fleet expected to reach international waters later this week.
Organisers accused Israel of repeatedly violating the ceasefire and expanding control in Gaza.
They said the flotilla aims to challenge what they describe as an illegal blockade.

US blockade threat on Iran risks wider global disruption, analyst warns

13. April 2026 um 08:08

The United States military has announced a plan to impose a naval blockade on Iranian ports on Monday after peace talks in Pakistan concluded without a deal.
Professor Mehran Kamrava of Georgetown University in Qatar and Director of the Iranian Studies Unit at the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies told Al Jazeera that President Trump has once again engaged in "extremist rhetoric," adding that "the devil is in the details" regarding whether a blockade can be enforced without triggering Iranian retaliation.
Kamrava warned that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has not hesitated to hit energy facilities in Gulf states, and that Iran has "consistently surprised us" throughout the conflict — from hitting Gulf states to not buckling early on — suggesting more surprises may be in store.
He noted that Iran has already laid mines in the strait and has "lost track of those mines, which adds to the hazardous journey."
On great power dynamics, Kamrava said there are indications that China and Russia are giving Iran intelligence information but not necessarily supplies, though a prolonged war could change their calculus — especially China, a major buyer of Iranian oil, which would be "extremely detrimental" to its economy if the strait is closed.
Despite progress in Islamabad talks except on one or two key issues, Kamrava said neither side wants escalation, but Trump is a "victim" of his own extremist rhetoric and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's expansionist policies.
