The world is reckoning with the biggest oil supply disruption in history, one that has sent energy prices soaring, rattled stock markets and exposed the deep vulnerabilities of economies still hooked on fossil fuels. While millions face higher fuel and energy bills, top oil and gas companies are reportedly profiting about $30m per hour since the war began.
This week on UpFront, Redi Tlhabi speaks with renowned economist Mariana Mazzucato about what a genuine green industrial strategy looks like, why the World Bank has fallen short, and how her concept of the "common good economy" offers a new compass for governments navigating crises.

A senior Hezbollah official has described negotiations between the Lebanese government and Israel as an act of “surrender.” Mahmud Qamati said the talks “do not concern” the group, signalling Hezbollah’s rejection of the negotiations.
Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has described the five permanent members of the UN Security Council as “Lords of War.” He called on them to stop acting like “emperors” and waging war on poorer countries.
After a day of mixed messaging on the state of the Strait of Hormuz, US President Donald Trump says he's still optimistic about talks with Tehran, saying that negotiation with Iranian officials is ongoing. His comments come hours after the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps announced they're re-establishing control over the Strait of Hormuz.

With the ceasefire in effect in Lebanon, thousands of people displaced by Israel's strikes and forced evacuation orders are going back to their homes.
But for many, the return has brought heartbreak rather than relief.
They have found devastation - destroyed homes, buildings and facilities.
The US-brokered truce, which came into effect on Friday, is set to last 10 days and is meant to open the door to more talks.
Israel and Hezbollah have warned residents against going back during the pause in fighting.
On the ground, the truce remains fragile as Israeli forces are still present in parts of the south.
Al Jazeera's Zeina Khodr meets displaced families returning to Beirut.

Fishing in Gaza is a main source of food and income for thousands of families. But Israel’s war has damaged almost all the boats in the strip, while the military prevents those that remain from going far from shore.
That’s not been enough to stop some Palestinians from getting their boats ready for the water.

A fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran holds - but the information war intensifies. At the centre: the Strait of Hormuz, where competing US and Iranian narratives have collided.
During any truce, even when the bombs stop falling, the information war goes on. Moments like this test journalism. Because the job is not just to report on the messaging coming from all sides - but to decode and debunk it if necessary.

Israel’s relations with its European allies are fraying, with increasingly sharp rhetoric from both sides playing out across political and media platforms. Meenakshi Ravi reports.
The Iranian diaspora in the media: Interview with Narges Bajoghli
The Iranian diaspora contains a wide range of often conflicting views. But judging by its representation in mainstream Western media, one might assume the dominant position is support for the war.
We speak to Narges Bajoghli about how diaspora voices are weaponised in coverage of Iran.

Palestinian Prisoners' Day is observed every year on April the 17th to highlight the conditions of those held in Israeli jails.
The number of imprisoned Palestinians has doubled since Israel's war on Gaza began in October 2023.
More than 9,600 Palestinians are currently detained in Israel and the occupied West Bank.
The number of administrative detainees, those held without charge or trial, has risen to more than 3,500.
That's up from 1,300 before the war.
The number of children has exceeded 350 with about half of them held without trial or charge.
And since 2023, at least 89 Palestinians have died in Israeli detention, reportedly due to hunger, medical negligence, and torture.
Rights groups say this is part of a wider system of repression.
Al Jazeera’s Dalya Al Masri reports.

Iran has announced it is closing the Strait of Hormuz again less than 24 hours after declaring the waterway open.
It says the United States must lift its blockade of Iranian ports before marine traffic can flow freely.
The tension has placed a chokehold on the global economy, heavily restricting the movement of energy supplies worldwide.
Al Jazeera’s Tohid Asadi has the latest from Tehran.
