Malik Samuel, a senior researcher at Good Governance Africa, joins Al Jazeera live from Abuja. He says the deadly attack on Muguru community in north-central Nigeria was likely carried out by a Boko Haram faction, not bandits, based on the group’s known tactics and local testimonies. Samuel adds that the attack highlights a broader failure by Nigerian authorities to protect remote communities, blaming slow security responses, poor infrastructure, and a lack of proactive action against armed groups.

What happens when a person has no country?
Citizens of Nowhere is a documentary short about stateless people in the United States - individuals who, through circumstance or legal technicality, belong to no nation. Without passports, citizenship or legal recognition, they live in a state of uncertainty.
From finding work and accessing education, to simply existing within a system that does not officially recognise them, stateless people face endless bureaucratic barriers.
This documentary short by Alicia Sully questions what citizenship really means, and what happens when a person has none.

More than 9,000 Palestinians are held in Israeli prisons.
A report by Israeli rights organisation B’Tselem reveals the inhumane treatment they endure.
The report finds at least 84 Palestinians have died in Israeli detention centres since the war on Gaza began in October 2023.
Israel has yet to hand over 80 of the bodies.
Testimonies gathered by B’Tselem indicate Palestinians face systematic physical, psychological and sexual abuse. The organisation describes Israeli prisons as a network of torture camps.
It says the denial of medical care is a method of torture itself, and leads to irreversible harm, such as amputations and loss of hearing and eyesight.
The report states living conditions in Israeli prisons remain inhumane, with overcrowding, prolonged shackling, deliberate starvation and the denial of basic hygiene.
Al Jazeera’s Nida Ibrahim reports on the toll these abuses have taken on Palestinians.

The Israel-Palestine director of Human Rights Watch (HRW) has resigned in protest, saying the organisation’s new chief blocked a report accusing Israel of committing “crimes against humanity” in its denial of Palestinian refugees’ right of return.
Omar Shakir, who has worked for the rights group for more than 10 years, told Al Jazeera on Tuesday that the report “sought to connect the erasure of camps in Gaza with the emptying of camps in the West Bank, with the full assault led by the Israeli government against UNRWA, the [United Nations] aid agency for Palestinian refugees and underscoring how in the midst of this Nakba 2.0 that we’re seeing unfold beyond us, it’s critical that we learn the lessons from Nakba 1.0”.

US funding cuts threaten African research as scientists and researchers from the United States and Africa meet in Senegal to discuss the future of innovation on the continent. Since 2025, nearly three billion dollars in research funding has been cut or frozen under President Donald Trump, with public health, vaccine research and climate science particularly affected. African scientists say projects have been derailed, including cutting-edge work turning peanut shells into batteries. Israel has killed at least 20 Palestinians in a major escalation across Gaza on Wednesday, violating the US-brokered ceasefire.
strikes and artillery shelling have hit Gaza City, Khan Yunis, and al-Mawasi, making movement extremely dangerous.
A Palestinian Red Crescent medic was killed while evacuating the wounded, highlighting the risks to emergency crews.
Medical evacuations remain severely limited, with Israel briefly halting coordination for Palestinian patients at Rafah crossing.
The suspension was blamed on missing WHO data, though coordination resumed later in the day.
Israeli authorities claim the attacks respond to an incident injuring an Israeli officer, though evidence is limited.
Airstrikes continue in eastern Gaza City, including Tuffah and Zeitoun neighbourhoods, adding to mounting casualties.
Tensions remain high as drones and fighter jets patrol the skies, signalling further potential attacks.
