Turkiye's Erdogan on two-day visit to Saudi Arabia and Egypt to discuss regional issues

03. Februar 2026 um 17:45

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is on a two-day visit to Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
He's set to discuss regional issues including developments in Gaza and Iran.
Erdogan has arrived in Riyadh, his first visit to the kingdom in more than two years.
He's scheduled to meet Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The president is accompanied by foreign minister Hakan Fidan, along with several other top officials.

Ties between Saudi Arabia and Turkiye have been strained since 2018 but have improved in recent months.
The nations are major economic partners and have been expanding trade and defence cooperation.
They're also likely to discuss a possible defence pact that includes Pakistan.

To discuss this developing story, we’re joined by Abdulaziz al-Gashian, a Senior Non-Resident Fellow with the Gulf International Forum and Barin Kayaoglu Chair and Assistant Professor of American Studies at the Social Sciences University of Ankara.

03. Februar 2026 um 17:30

Renewed threats to strike Iran have once again raised the stakes across the Middle East.
The US and Israel have toughened their stance against Tehran in recent weeks as the country was gripped by nationwide protests.
Iran accused Israel of interference in those demonstrations.
As the war rhetoric ramps up, Iran is threatening to inflict heavy damage on Israel, if it's attacked.
The tension between the two sides follows decades of mutual hostility that has shaped the geopolitics of the region.
So, does diplomacy stand a chance in this long-running conflict?

'Rojava at a crossroads' as ceasefire deal redraws Kurds in Syria, analyst warns

03. Februar 2026 um 14:22

Syria's army is preparing to enter the north-eastern city of Qamishli - another stronghold of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
It's part of a crucial ceasefire deal reached between the two sides.
There's a day-time curfew in place in the city, which authorities say is needed to “maintain order during the transition.”
The deployments mark a crucial step in implementing the ceasefire deal which will see the SDF integrated into the government.

Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr has the latest from Pirak, on the outskirts of the area.

Hiwa Osman is a former adviser to Iraqi President Jalal Talabani and director general of 964media.com. He says Rojava is now “at a crossroads”, with a fragile ceasefire and an uneasy SDF–Damascus deal that could either lead to renewed repression and bloodshed against Kurds or open the door to constitutional rights and a new model for Kurdish autonomy in Syria.

Israel’s endgame in Iran – regime collapse and state disintegration: Analysis

03. Februar 2026 um 13:24

Iran's president has confirmed that Tehran will negotiate directly with United States, after weeks of escalating tensions between the two countries.
A senior Iranian official has told Al Jazeera that those talks are expected to be held in Turkiye in the coming days.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is expected to meet US special envoy Steve Witkoff.

Ahead of those negotiations, US special envoy Steve Witkoff is heading to Israel for talks with Benjamin Netanyahu on Gaza and Iran.
Senior Israeli military officials have also been in Washington for talks on possible Iran strikes.
Al Jazeera looks at why many in Israel are lobbying against a diplomatic breakthrough.

Daniel Levy is President of the US Middle East Project and a former Israeli political negotiator, and he says Israel is actively trying to block any real US‑Iran diplomatic breakthrough because its strategic goal is not de‑escalation but regime and even state collapse in Iran.

Rebuilding Gaza’s decimated health system ‘most efficient’ way to treat patients: WHO

03. Februar 2026 um 12:35

Not only does Gaza’s border with Egypt need to fully open but so do all other “pathways for patients”, says Tarik Jasarevic, a spokesperson for the World Health Organization (WHO).

“We know the most time-efficient and cost-efficient referral pathways are through to the West Bank and East Jerusalem, where there are medical facilities ready to receive patients,” Jasarevic told Al Jazeera.

“We have been calling for the opening of all crossings throughout the war,” he added.

While thousands of patients in Gaza need security clearances from Israeli authorities to leave the enclave for treatment, countries around the world also need to step forward and accept wounded and ill Palestinians after more than two years of devastation, Jasarevic said.

“So far during the war, we evacuated more than 10,000 people, and the majority of these people went to Egypt and after that the United Arab Emirates, Turkey and some European countries. … What we really should be focused on now is to rebuild the health system inside Gaza so we don’t rely so much on evacuations.”

Record gold prices spark new rush in Australia's historic mining towns

03. Februar 2026 um 12:30

Gold fever has returned to remote New South Wales as the precious metal's price surges more than 60 per cent, drawing tourists and prospectors to historic Australian mining areas. The boom, driven by geopolitical uncertainty pushing investors towards safe-haven assets, has reignited interest in fossicking and commercial operations in towns like Hill End, which hosted 30,000 people during the mid-1800s gold rush. Whilst jewellery retailers report declining sales due to high prices, locals and operators believe modern technology could uncover significant deposits still hidden in the region's gold-bearing creeks.

East Palestine residents report health issues three years after Ohio train derailment

03. Februar 2026 um 12:01

Three years after a catastrophic train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, the village is using a $22m settlement from Norfolk Southern Railway to revamp its old freight depot and fund local projects. The 2023 disaster saw 38 cars derail and catch fire after a wheel bearing overheated, with 11 carrying hazardous materials. Whilst the company has completed remediation efforts and paid over $900m in total settlements and cleanup costs, residents report ongoing health issues including tumours and tremors. A long-term study is examining the effects of exposure to multiple toxic chemicals, as the community hopes their experience will prevent future disasters.

Yemen's skilled workers turn to odd jobs as war halts government salaries

03. Februar 2026 um 11:01

Years of war and a US-backed economic blockade have forced Yemen's skilled professionals—engineers, technicians and civil servants—to abandon government jobs and join the informal economy just to survive.
Bashir al-Merhibi, once employed in land and housing projects, now works as a plumber and motorbike taxi driver after his salary stopped. The exodus of qualified workers, particularly in medical and academic sectors, has left critical gaps across the country and worsened Yemen's humanitarian crisis.
As fears of renewed conflict mount, workers continue adapting to support their families whilst communities struggle with the loss of essential expertise.

‘Wael’s last wish’: ICE denies release of Texas man for son’s funeral

03. Februar 2026 um 09:54

Wael Tarabishi, a 30-year-old man with a rare genetic condition, died days after his father Maher was detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a routine check-in.
Maher, an undocumented immigrant previously allowed to remain in the United States to care for his son, was refused release despite family warnings that Mayel could not survive without him.
ICE also denied Maher permission to attend his son's funeral, claiming he is a criminal with a felony conviction, allegations the family categorically denies.
The case has raised questions about compassion and enforcement priorities within US immigration policy.

Chile nominates Bachelet as first candidate for UN secretary-general

03. Februar 2026 um 08:55

The United Nations faces a critical juncture as the race begins to replace Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, with former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet emerging as the first official candidate, backed by Chile, Mexico and Brazil.
Twice Chile's president and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Bachelet enters a competitive field that includes candidates from Costa Rica, Ecuador, Argentina and Barbados, all vying to lead an organisation in crisis.
The winner must secure unanimous Security Council approval at a time when founding members, including the United States, openly question the UN's relevance, and the body struggles with wars, climate change and institutional paralysis.

DRC Rubaya mine tragedy highlights risks of artisanal mining

03. Februar 2026 um 08:14

Rubaya in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo sits atop some of the world's most strategic minerals—coltan, tin and tungsten—essential for modern technology.
Since M23 rebels captured the town last year, control of these resources has become central to a growing regional controversy, despite a US-backed peace deal signed between the DRC and Rwanda. Thousands of artisanal miners work vast open pits daily by hand, whilst multiple UN and NGO reports accuse M23 of earning up to $1 million monthly from the trade.
Just days after filming, nearly 200 miners were killed when a section of the mine collapsed, leaving many still trapped underground and highlighting the deadly risks of poor safety standards in DRC's artisanal mining sector.

US envoy Witkoff heads to Israel ahead of nuclear talks with Iran and amid regional tensions

03. Februar 2026 um 07:19

US special envoy Steve Witkoff is travelling to Israel to hold discussions on Gaza and Iran with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and military leaders, ahead of planned US-Iranian talks that Israel has opposed. Whilst regional actors have worked to facilitate diplomacy, Israeli political and public opinion overwhelmingly favours striking Iran and pursuing regime change, a position Netanyahu has advocated for decades. The consultations come as the US has significantly increased its military presence in the region under President Trump's "peace through strength" doctrine, and as senior Israeli officials have held Washington talks on potential targets and tactics should the administration choose military action over negotiation.

Syrian security forces enter Hasakah under ceasefire agreement with Kurdish-led SDF

03. Februar 2026 um 04:53

A convoy of 150 Syrian soldiers has entered the city of Hasaka in northeastern Syria as part of a phased transfer of internal security duties from the Kurdish-led SDF to state authorities. The deployment follows an agreement signed last week under which the SDF will hand over territory, government offices, and oil and gas fields it has controlled since Syria's civil war. Whilst the Syrian government pledges to guarantee civil and political rights for Kurds, many remain apprehensive about coming under Damascus's control, with some factions within the SDF opposing the deal. The transfer was coordinated with the Asayesh, the SDF's internal police force, and officials say further areas will transition to government control in the coming days.

What’s inside the latest release of the Epstein files?

03. Februar 2026 um 04:25

The latest release of evidence from the Jeffrey Epstein case has exposed more than 3 million pages of documents, including 2,000 videos and 180,000 images, implicating prominent global figures in their associations with the late convicted paedophile.
The materials reveal politically sensitive connections to Britain's former Duke of York, Norway's Crown Princess, Slovakia's national security adviser, and business leaders including Elon Musk, Richard Branson and Bill Gates.
US President Donald Trump, whose name appears thousands of times in the files, is threatening legal action against Epstein's estate and author Michael Wolff over claims he denies.
Survivors' advocates criticise the release for lacking transparency, whilst growing calls demand the disclosure of all 6 million pages collected by the Department of Justice.

How important is the reopening of Gaza's Rafah crossing? | Inside Story

02. Februar 2026 um 17:30

The Rafah border crossing has finally reopened after months of closure as a result of Israel's devastating war on the Strip.
Hopes were running high that the freedom of movement would ease the dire humanitarian crisis created by this war.
But Israel has set strict conditions on who would leave the Strip and who would enter.
Now, only a small number people are allowed to move in both directions.
But much-needed humanitarian aid and construction material are still barred from entering the Strip, which is in ruins.
Will this reopening ease the suffering of Palestinians after two years of war?

Guests:

Hussein Haridy - Fomer Egyptian Assistant Foreign Minister.

Mosab Nasser - CEO of FAJR Global, an organisation that provides medical care, surgical missions and emergency evacuations.

‘Fox guarding the henhouse’ – Netanyahu, Trump and the future of Gaza: Marwan Bishara

Israel’s limited reopening of Gaza’s Rafah crossing a ‘death warrant’ for patients: Analysis

02. Februar 2026 um 12:01

Palestinians in need of urgent medical care are set to leave Gaza through the Rafah crossing as it reopens for the first time in nearly two years.
Ambulances and buses are transferring patients and some of their family members from southern Gaza to the border with Egypt.
Israel is severely limiting the number of daily crossings to Palestinians with prior approval.
Only 50 patients with two family members a day will be allowed to cross.
But there are more than 20,000 patients waiting for treatment abroad.

For patients in Gaza whose injuries or illnesses cannot be treated locally, evacuation abroad can mean the difference between life and death.
But getting out takes time and it is tightly controlled.

Dr Mohammed Abu Salmiya, director of Gaza City’s al-Shifa Hospital, says there are 20,000 patients in the Palestinian territory, including 4,500 children, in urgent need of medical evacuation.

International students slowly return to Damascus to study Classical Arabic after years of war

02. Februar 2026 um 11:07

Foreign students are gradually returning to Damascus to study Arabic after more than a decade of absence caused by Syria's civil war. Before 2011, the capital hosted hundreds of international learners annually through universities and institutes, but the conflict forced a complete halt. The University of Damascus, which once ran exchange programmes with Western institutions, currently has no international students enrolled in its Arabic programme, though officials say they are ready to welcome learners again. Students from Malaysia and other countries now attending private institutes say they are drawn by immersive teaching and Syria's cultural heritage, whilst local students express hope that Damascus can rebuild its reputation as a centre for Arabic learning.

Vietnam's economy pivots to tourism as US tariffs threaten textiles

02. Februar 2026 um 10:48

Vietnam's economy is navigating a sharp rise in tariffs whilst pivoting towards tourism and services to sustain growth.
The country's textile industry, employing millions since the post-war era, now faces a combined 37 per cent tariff increase that manufacturers compare to the pandemic's economic shock.
Yet tourism has grown 8 per cent in 2025, with overseas visitors up more than 20 per cent, helping offset manufacturing pressures. The government is targeting 10 per cent growth in 2026, banking on resilience built through decades of economic pragmatism and integration into global supply chains.

Rafah crossing reopens: Gaza patients die waiting as medical evacuations remain tightly restricted

02. Februar 2026 um 09:41

Patients in Gaza who cannot be treated locally must undergo a lengthy, tightly controlled process to be evacuated abroad, often determining life or death.
Doctors submit cases through hospitals to a central referral committee, with approvals coordinated by the World Health Organization.
Final clearance is required from Israel, before evacuations can take place.
Many patients died while waiting, including three-year-old Ibtisam Abu Ameera, whose papers were approved only days before her death.
Since the Rafah crossing closed, at least 1,268 Palestinians have died awaiting medical evacuation, while around 20,000 remain on waiting lists.
Israel says it will allow 50 patients a day to leave, a pace that could take more than a year to clear the backlog.
Although Rafah is reopening, limited numbers mean many critically ill patients may still be left behind.

Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary reports from Gaza City, Palestine.
