He told him to spend more time fixing his broken country and less “interfering with those that are getting rid of the Iran nuclear threat.”
On Monday Merz said Iran was humiliating the US in the ongoing conflict.
The chancellor has spoken again since then but before the most recent post from President Trump, stressing how much he values the transatlantic partnership.

Tom Fletcher, the UN undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs, has warned during a visit to Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, that the US-Israel war on Iran is already hitting the country hard.

“I’ve been in Somalia for almost a week now, and I’m hearing every day, every hour, the impact of this crisis,” Fletcher told Al Jazeera.

“Remember that Somalia was already facing enormous needs … and now with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, you have a doubling of food prices, a doubling of fuel prices,” Fletcher added.

“The result, I’m afraid, is that the danger of famine is looming once again in this region. You’ve got half a million kids in severe acute malnutrition. You got a doubling in hunger past six months. So, we need the world to wake up to the crisis here.”

The most powerful warship ever built is packing up and heading home. Right now. While peace talks with Iran are stalled. While a critical military briefing is days away. While the Strait of Hormuz sits on a knife's edge.



So the question everyone is asking — did Iran just blink? Or did America?

First — understand what the USS Gerald R. Ford actually is. This is not just any aircraft carrier. It is the most advanced, most expensive, most capable warship in human history. Nuclear powered. Roughly 5,000 sailors and aviators on board. Dozens of fighter jets on deck.



And it has been at sea for nearly 300 days straight — breaking the post-Cold War record for the longest carrier deployment in modern US Navy history. It left Norfolk, Virginia in June 2025. A major escalation has been reported in Russia’s Perm region, where Ukrainian long-range drones allegedly targeted key oil infrastructure in a renewed wave of strikes. According to multiple reports, one of Russia’s major refineries, the Lukoil-Permnefteorgsintez facility, was hit during the attack, triggering large fires and significant damage to critical processing and storage units.

The strikes are said to be part of Ukraine’s ongoing campaign against Russian energy infrastructure, aimed at disrupting fuel production and supply chains far from the frontline. Satellite imagery and open-source assessments suggest multiple oil storage tanks and refinery components were affected, with thick smoke and fire visible across the site.

Russian authorities confirmed industrial facilities were targeted and fires broke out, while emergency services responded to contain the damage. The full extent of destruction is still being assessed as investigations continue.
