US, Iran ‘fighting their way to the negotiating table’, retired US general says

Mark Kimmitt, a retired US general and former diplomat, tells Al Jazeera the current posturing by the United States and Iran is an old playbook.

“It’s a classic way of fighting your way to the negotiating table,” he said. “Both sides want to demonstrate that they’re capable of fighting and they’re willing to fight, but down deep both sides want to negotiate.”

Kimmitt predicted over the next few days, “We’re going to see who blinks first.”

“They may not want peace right now, and certainly they don’t want the terms that are being offered by both sides,” he added. “But my guess is that there will be an extension of the ceasefire.”

Seit Jahren hat Johannesburg mit dunklen Straßen zu kämpfen, unter anderem weil Kabeldiebe die elektrische Infrastruktur zerstören. Angesichts der hohen Kriminalitätsrate ist das ein ernstes Problem, gegen das der Verein "Jozi my Jozi" in Kooperation mit staatlichen Stellen seit einigen Jahren vorgeht.

Der 2023 gemeinsam von Vereinen, engagierten Bürgern und der Witwatersrand-Universität ins Leben gerufene gemeinnützige Verein "Jozi my Jozi" (zu Deutsch etwa "Meine geliebte Josi", womit Johannesburg gemeint ist) hat sich ganz dem Kampf für einen besseren Alltag der Menschen in der größten Stadt Südafrikas verschrieben.

Auf der Webseite des Vereins sind Dutzende Projekte gelistet: ein neues öffentliches Bad, Probleme im Straßenverkehr, kostenlose Internet-Hotspots, Kampf gegen Obdachlosigkeit, Reinigungsaktionen, Beratungsstellen, Sportveranstaltungen und vieles mehr gehören zum Portfolio, aber das bekannteste Projekt mit dem größten Erfolg ist die Initiative "solar lights", solarbetriebene Straßenbeleuchtung.

In den letzten zwei Jahren wurden Hunderte Straßenlaternen in der Innenstadt installiert, die dank eines Solarpaneels unabhängig vom Stromnetz betrieben werden. Darüber hinaus sorgen auch die an den Laternenmasten befestigten Überwachungskameras für ein erhöhtes Gefühl der Sicherheit von Einwohnern und Besuchern der Stadt.

Tokyo says this will strengthen the country's defence and deter potential threats from regional powers.
But Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's government emphasised the country will continue to uphold the principles of a peace-loving nation.
Currently, Japan has defence transfer agreements with 17 countries including the UAE, the US, and India.

“This is what they call the fog of war, except this is the fog of peace,” said Ahmed Helal, managing director for the Gulf region at the Asia Group. “No one knows who’s going to be there.”

US-Streitkräfte haben nach eigenen Angaben ein sanktioniertes Tankschiff in internationalen Gewässern gestoppt und geentert. Der Einsatz fand im Zuständigkeitsbereich des Indo-Pazifik-Kommandos (INDOPACOM) statt und verlief laut US-Angaben ohne Zwischenfälle. Das US-Kriegsministerium veröffentlichte am Dienstag auf seinem offiziellen X-Account entsprechende Videoaufnahmen.

Demnach stand der gekaperte "staatenlose, sanktionierte Tanker M/T Tifani" im Verdacht, "Iran materiell zu unterstützen". Internationale Gewässer "sind kein sicherer Hafen für sanktionierte Schiffe", schrieb die Behörde weiter und kündigte an, solche Einsätze weltweit fortzusetzen. Bereits am Wochenende hatten die USA ein unter iranischer Flagge fahrendes Frachtschiff angegriffen und gekapert.

Am Montag hat sich der künftige Ministerpräsident Ungarns erneut zur bereits seit Januar außer Betrieb befindlichen Druschba-Pipeline geäußert.

"Wir werden keiner Form von Erpressung nachgeben, [...] und ich würde dem ukrainischen Präsidenten nicht empfehlen, diesen Weg einzuschlagen", sagte der designierte Ministerpräsident Péter Magyar. "So tritt man nicht Europa bei", fügte er hinzu.

"Wir fordern die Russen auf, Rohöl in die Pipeline einzuspeisen, denn ohne die Mitwirkung beider Seiten kann sie nicht funktionieren", erklärte Magyar außerdem.

Das technische Veto der Orbán-Regierung zu dem 90-Millionen-Euro-Kredit Brüssels an Kiew solle noch in den kommenden Wochen aufgehoben werden, sollte die Druschba-Pipeline in der Zwischenzeit ihre Arbeit wiederaufnehmen, erinnerte Magyar.

Seine neue Regierung soll bis Mitte Mai vereidigt werden und in Kraft treten.

Ein Bagger mit Saugaufsatz trägt die Sandbank rund um den Wal ab, während Helfer im Wasser den Einsatz koordinieren. Mit Hochdruck wird Sand weggespült – Ziel ist es, Timmy wieder freizubekommen.

OSTSEE-DRAMA: Großeinsatz für den gestrandeten Buckelwal laufen auf Hochtouren

Wismar (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) – Der Kampf um Timmys Leben geht weiter! Am Montag hatte er sich zunächst freigeschwommen, war nach einem Zickzack-Kurs dann aber wieder auf einer Sandbank gestrandet. Inzwischen ist der Wasserpegel dramatisch gesunken – eine gefährliche Situation für den Wal.

Ein Bagger mit Saugaufsatz trägt die Sandbank rund um den Wal ab, während Helfer im Wasser den Einsatz koordinieren. Mit Hochdruck wird Sand weggespült – Ziel ist es, Timmy wieder freizubekommen.

Displaced Lebanese remain in limbo as truce shows signs of strain

Israel's military continues to occupy towns and villages in southern Lebanon, while the temporary 10-day ceasefire, set to expire on Sunday, remains fragile. The United States is bringing together Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors for a second meeting on Thursday to discuss extending the truce. Negotiations face obstacles over differing agendas: Lebanon wants Israel to withdraw, while Israel demands Hezbollah's disarmament. Hezbollah has called on the Lebanese government not to engage in direct talks with Israel, arguing it should instead link with broader regional diplomacy involving Iran. Many displaced people remain reluctant to return home amid ongoing insecurity and Israeli demolitions.

In der südrussischen Großstadt Rostow am Don ist es am Sonntag bei einer Zirkusvorstellung zu einem gefährlichen Vorfall gekommen. Ein Tiger sprang ins Publikum, nachdem eine Halterung des Schutznetzes versagt hatte.

Das Personal mahnte über Lautsprecher zur Ruhe, während sich das Tier für kurze Zeit frei durch die Ränge bewegte. Den Dompteuren gelang es schließlich, den Tiger unverletzt in einen speziellen Transportcontainer zu leiten. Bei dem Vorfall kam niemand zu Schaden. 

Die russischen Behörden haben inzwischen strafrechtliche Ermittlungen wegen möglicher Sicherheitsverstöße eingeleitet.

Qatar says it is in contact with all parties before Islamabad talks

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari held his weekly press briefing in Doha, announcing that the Amir had received Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif last Thursday and expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s role in de-escalating tensions and promoting peace in the region.
Al-Ansari said Qatar is “supporting fully the efforts of our brothers in Pakistan” to mediate between the United States and Iran, noting ongoing contacts with all parties involved. He stressed that Qatar views mediation not as a “media show” but as an “effective role” aimed at advancing political solutions.
On the Strait of Hormuz, he warned that any disruption “will transfer this crisis to the international world,” affecting global energy markets as well as electricity and heating supplies. He said Qatar remains committed to its energy partners and can be “trusted very well throughout history.”
He confirmed continued direct contacts with Iran, including a recent call between the Prime Minister and the Iranian foreign minister, urging restraint and a return to peaceful dialogue.
On the ceasefire, al-Ansari said contingency plans are in place for Qatar’s national defence, with armed forces remaining on alert, while diplomatic efforts continue with all parties to extend the ceasefire or end hostilities.
He also condemned Israeli attacks on Lebanon, reaffirming Qatar’s support for Lebanon’s sovereignty and unity, and said both sides participated seriously in the first round of talks in Islamabad, while noting that contradictory reports are being closely monitored with concern.

Eine schwere Explosion erschütterte am späten Montagabend das Kraftwerk CET Vest in Bukarest. Ein Transformator hatte Feuer gefangen und einen Großbrand ausgelöst, der von rund 40 Tonnen Kühlöl genährt wurde.

Über 3.000 Wohnblöcke verloren dabei nach Angaben des Energieministeriums die Warmwasserversorgung. Die Reparaturarbeiten an der Infrastruktur werden voraussichtlich bis zu einem Jahr dauern.

Die Feuerwehr hat den Brand nach drei Stunden unter Kontrolle gebracht. Nun untersuchen die Behörden die Ursache. In Medienberichten wird über eine mögliche Sabotage spekuliert.

Nach der Sitzung des "Ad-hoc-Verbindungsausschusses (AHLC) zu Palästina" rechtfertigte sich die EU-Außenbeauftragte Kaja Kallas am Montag im Gespräch mit der Presse zu den Vorwürfen eines Doppelstandards. "Europa ist der größte Unterstützer des palästinensischen Volkes", konstatierte Kallas. Aus der EU käme das meiste Geld und die einflussreichste politische Unterstützung, so die estnische Politikerin.

Laut der Presse bezieht sich der Doppelstandard jedoch konkret auf die Kluft zwischen der präzedenzlosen EU-Hilfe an die Ukraine und den 20 Sanktionspaketen gegen Russland auf der einen Seite und den fehlenden Sanktionen gegen Israel oder seine Siedler und der im Vergleich gehemmten Palästina-Hilfe auf der anderen. Darauf erwiderte Kallas, dass Ungarn unter Premier Viktor Orbán mit seinem Vetorecht bisher jegliche EU-Sanktionen gegen Israel vereitelte. Laut ihr seien die übrigen 26 EU-Mitglieder bereit für Israel-Sanktionen. "Nun hat dieses Land Wahlen abgehalten und wird eine neue Regierung bekommen ", merkte sie an und stellte einen möglichen Kurswechsel in dieser Hinsicht in Aussicht.
