Abu Sayed, a student protester, was fatally shot by police outside Rangpur University gates on 16 July 2024, sparking mass demonstrations that toppled Bangladesh's government and led to this month's elections.
His defiant final stand, broadcast live, became the defining image of the revolution.
Whilst his family and fellow protesters hope for justice and systemic change, many express concern that the country's deep-rooted inequality, corruption and nepotism remain largely unaddressed, with the top 1 percent holding a quarter of the nation's wealth.
Al Jazeera's Tony Cheng reports from Rangpur, northwestern Bangladesh.

Tensions are escalating in Ethiopia's Tigray region following a weekend drone strike that killed civilians, with the regional government accusing the national army of carrying out the attack. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed addressed parliament, blaming the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) for ongoing problems whilst highlighting the presence of Eritrean forces in Tigray, which he accused of committing mass atrocities. Internal divisions within the TPLF and fears of renewed conflict have prompted some residents to flee, as communities still recovering from a war that killed over 100,000 people call for de-escalation.

The Syrian army has entered the northeastern city of Qamishli, one of the last strongholds of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces. It's part of a ceasefire deal and an agreement that's meant to see the SDF integrate into the Syrian army. A large convoy of trucks was seen entering the city. A daytime curfew was declared, which authorities say is needed to 'maintain order during the transition.' Syrian government forces have established control over most of the country in the past few weeks.

Syria's army is preparing to enter the north-eastern city of Qamishli - another stronghold of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
It's part of a crucial ceasefire deal reached between the two sides.

Iran's president has confirmed that Tehran will negotiate directly with United States, after weeks of escalating tensions between the two countries.
A senior Iranian official has told Al Jazeera that those talks are expected to be held in Turkiye in the coming days.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is expected to meet US special envoy Steve Witkoff.
Ahead of those negotiations, US special envoy Steve Witkoff is heading to Israel for talks with Benjamin Netanyahu on Gaza and Iran.
Senior Israeli military officials have also been in Washington for talks on possible Iran strikes.
Al Jazeera looks at why many in Israel are lobbying against a diplomatic breakthrough.
Daniel Levy is President of the US Middle East Project and a former Israeli political negotiator, and he says Israel is actively trying to block any real US‑Iran diplomatic breakthrough because its strategic goal is not de‑escalation but regime and even state collapse in Iran.

Not only does Gaza’s border with Egypt need to fully open but so do all other “pathways for patients”, says Tarik Jasarevic, a spokesperson for the World Health Organization (WHO).
“We know the most time-efficient and cost-efficient referral pathways are through to the West Bank and East Jerusalem, where there are medical facilities ready to receive patients,” Jasarevic told Al Jazeera.
“We have been calling for the opening of all crossings throughout the war,” he added.
While thousands of patients in Gaza need security clearances from Israeli authorities to leave the enclave for treatment, countries around the world also need to step forward and accept wounded and ill Palestinians after more than two years of devastation, Jasarevic said.
“So far during the war, we evacuated more than 10,000 people, and the majority of these people went to Egypt and after that the United Arab Emirates, Turkey and some European countries. … What we really should be focused on now is to rebuild the health system inside Gaza so we don’t rely so much on evacuations.”

Gold fever has returned to remote New South Wales as the precious metal's price surges more than 60 per cent, drawing tourists and prospectors to historic Australian mining areas. The boom, driven by geopolitical uncertainty pushing investors towards safe-haven assets, has reignited interest in fossicking and commercial operations in towns like Hill End, which hosted 30,000 people during the mid-1800s gold rush. Whilst jewellery retailers report declining sales due to high prices, locals and operators believe modern technology could uncover significant deposits still hidden in the region's gold-bearing creeks.

Years of war and a US-backed economic blockade have forced Yemen's skilled professionals—engineers, technicians and civil servants—to abandon government jobs and join the informal economy just to survive.
Bashir al-Merhibi, once employed in land and housing projects, now works as a plumber and motorbike taxi driver after his salary stopped. The exodus of qualified workers, particularly in medical and academic sectors, has left critical gaps across the country and worsened Yemen's humanitarian crisis.

Wael Tarabishi, a 30-year-old man with a rare genetic condition, died days after his father Maher was detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a routine check-in.
Maher, an undocumented immigrant previously allowed to remain in the United States to care for his son, was refused release despite family warnings that Mayel could not survive without him.
ICE also denied Maher permission to attend his son's funeral, claiming he is a criminal with a felony conviction, allegations the family categorically denies.
The case has raised questions about compassion and enforcement priorities within US immigration policy.

The United Nations faces a critical juncture as the race begins to replace Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, with former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet emerging as the first official candidate, backed by Chile, Mexico and Brazil.
Twice Chile's president and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Bachelet enters a competitive field that includes candidates from Costa Rica, Ecuador, Argentina and Barbados, all vying to lead an organisation in crisis.
The winner must secure unanimous Security Council approval at a time when founding members, including the United States, openly question the UN's relevance, and the body struggles with wars, climate change and institutional paralysis.

Rubaya in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo sits atop some of the world's most strategic minerals—coltan, tin and tungsten—essential for modern technology.
Since M23 rebels captured the town last year, control of these resources has become central to a growing regional controversy, despite a US-backed peace deal signed between the DRC and Rwanda. Thousands of artisanal miners work vast open pits daily by hand, whilst multiple UN and NGO reports accuse M23 of earning up to $1 million monthly from the trade.
Just days after filming, nearly 200 miners were killed when a section of the mine collapsed, leaving many still trapped underground and highlighting the deadly risks of poor safety standards in DRC's artisanal mining sector.
