How important is the reopening of Gaza's Rafah crossing? | Inside Story

02. Februar 2026 um 17:30

The Rafah border crossing has finally reopened after months of closure as a result of Israel's devastating war on the Strip.
Hopes were running high that the freedom of movement would ease the dire humanitarian crisis created by this war.
But Israel has set strict conditions on who would leave the Strip and who would enter.
Now, only a small number people are allowed to move in both directions.
But much-needed humanitarian aid and construction material are still barred from entering the Strip, which is in ruins.
Will this reopening ease the suffering of Palestinians after two years of war?

Presenter: Maleen Saeed

Guests:

Hussein Haridy - Fomer Egyptian Assistant Foreign Minister.

Mosab Nasser - CEO of FAJR Global, an organisation that provides medical care, surgical missions and emergency evacuations.

Akiva Eldar - Political Analyst and Contributer to Haaretz newspaper.

UpScrolled: Fast‑growing, censorship‑free TikTok and Instagram alternative

02. Februar 2026 um 17:02

A fast-growing social media app is in the spotlight at a technology conference in Qatar's capital.
UpScrolled has seen a meteoric rise in downloads.
That was triggered by the sale of TikTok in the US and concerns that it would result in a crackdown on pro-Palestinian content.
UpScrolled has positioned itself as a censorship-free alternative and one that's backed by a Palestinian tech incubator.

Al Jazeera’s Aksel Zaimovic reports from Web Summit in Doha, Qatar.

‘Fox guarding the henhouse’ – Netanyahu, Trump and the future of Gaza: Marwan Bishara

Gaza's Rafah crossing is reopening for the first time in nearly two years for Palestinians who need urgent medical care.
Ambulances and busses are taking patients and their family members from southern Gaza to the border with Egypt.

Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst, Marwan Bishara, says Rafah’s “100 days too late” reopening proves Israel still tightly controls Gaza and that Palestinians now face a prolonged “war by other means” shaped by US policy, Trump’s Gaza plan and Netanyahu’s election politics.

Israel’s limited reopening of Gaza’s Rafah crossing a ‘death warrant’ for patients: Analysis

02. Februar 2026 um 12:01

Palestinians in need of urgent medical care are set to leave Gaza through the Rafah crossing as it reopens for the first time in nearly two years.
Ambulances and buses are transferring patients and some of their family members from southern Gaza to the border with Egypt.
Israel is severely limiting the number of daily crossings to Palestinians with prior approval.
Only 50 patients with two family members a day will be allowed to cross.
But there are more than 20,000 patients waiting for treatment abroad.

For patients in Gaza whose injuries or illnesses cannot be treated locally, evacuation abroad can mean the difference between life and death.
But getting out takes time and it is tightly controlled.

Dr Mohammed Abu Salmiya, director of Gaza City’s al-Shifa Hospital, says there are 20,000 patients in the Palestinian territory, including 4,500 children, in urgent need of medical evacuation.

International students slowly return to Damascus to study Classical Arabic after years of war

02. Februar 2026 um 11:07

Foreign students are gradually returning to Damascus to study Arabic after more than a decade of absence caused by Syria's civil war. Before 2011, the capital hosted hundreds of international learners annually through universities and institutes, but the conflict forced a complete halt. The University of Damascus, which once ran exchange programmes with Western institutions, currently has no international students enrolled in its Arabic programme, though officials say they are ready to welcome learners again. Students from Malaysia and other countries now attending private institutes say they are drawn by immersive teaching and Syria's cultural heritage, whilst local students express hope that Damascus can rebuild its reputation as a centre for Arabic learning.

Vietnam's economy pivots to tourism as US tariffs threaten textiles

02. Februar 2026 um 10:48

Vietnam's economy is navigating a sharp rise in tariffs whilst pivoting towards tourism and services to sustain growth.
The country's textile industry, employing millions since the post-war era, now faces a combined 37 per cent tariff increase that manufacturers compare to the pandemic's economic shock.
Yet tourism has grown 8 per cent in 2025, with overseas visitors up more than 20 per cent, helping offset manufacturing pressures. The government is targeting 10 per cent growth in 2026, banking on resilience built through decades of economic pragmatism and integration into global supply chains.

Rafah crossing reopens: Gaza patients die waiting as medical evacuations remain tightly restricted

02. Februar 2026 um 09:41

Patients in Gaza who cannot be treated locally must undergo a lengthy, tightly controlled process to be evacuated abroad, often determining life or death.
Doctors submit cases through hospitals to a central referral committee, with approvals coordinated by the World Health Organization.
Final clearance is required from Israel, before evacuations can take place.
Many patients died while waiting, including three-year-old Ibtisam Abu Ameera, whose papers were approved only days before her death.
Since the Rafah crossing closed, at least 1,268 Palestinians have died awaiting medical evacuation, while around 20,000 remain on waiting lists.
Israel says it will allow 50 patients a day to leave, a pace that could take more than a year to clear the backlog.
Although Rafah is reopening, limited numbers mean many critically ill patients may still be left behind.

US-Iran tensions: ‘Diplomacy is the only exit,’ says Trita Parsi

02. Februar 2026 um 05:48

As tensions rise between Washington and Tehran, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has warned that a US attack could trigger a regional war. This comes as Donald Trump says he hopes for a deal, even while US military assets are positioned in the region and backchannel diplomacy continues.
Al Jazeera spoke to Trita Parsi, executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, about the risks and possible off-ramps.
Parsi says behind-the-scenes talks are underway, led by regional states including Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, Oman and Saudi Arabia, all seeking to prevent war. He argues most countries in the region believe a US–Iran conflict would be devastating and deeply destabilising, with no quick or clean victory for Washington. Parsi says the most effective path to de-escalation would be direct contact between Iran and Trump, even without formal negotiations. He believes Iran’s warnings of a regional war are credible and aimed primarily at Trump, as the White House may be overestimating Iran’s weakness and pursuing unrealistic demands. Parsi adds that Tehran calculates a limited but forceful response could shatter expectations of an easy US win, though he warns this strategy carries grave risks and could spiral into a prolonged war. Ultimately, he says diplomacy remains possible if Iran chooses to engage directly before the situation is tested militarily.

Gaza’s daily nightmare vs US talk of AI-driven smart cities | The Bottom Line

01. Februar 2026 um 19:45

United States plans for Gaza amount to a “theme park of dispossession” for Palestinians, argues Drop Site News Middle East Editor Sharif Abdel Kouddous.

Abdel Kouddous tells host Steve Clemons the draconian measures planned for the two million shell-shocked Palestinians in Gaza are an Orwellian labyrinth of biometrics, bureaucracy and “a lab for government surveillance” – all meant to drive them out.

Noting that Israel hasn’t “gone past phase one” of any ceasefire agreement with an Arab country, Abdel Kouddous warns that Israel is establishing facts on the ground in Gaza – including 50 military bases – “which eventually become permanent”.

In Minneapolis, Minnesota, the fatal shooting of a protester by border control agents triggered mass demonstrations and presented the Trump administration with an unexpected test of its immigration strategy. Footage captured by onlookers has undercut official statements and intensified questions about the level of force and use of high-tech tools being used to crack down on dissent.

Son of cancer patient in Gaza fights to evacuate father for urgent treatment

01. Februar 2026 um 18:52

Around 4,000 patients are suffering from cancer waiting for care that they cannot get in Gaza, waiting to be medically evacuated.
65-year-old Abed El Halim Abo Askar is one of them.
He has been battling prostate cancer for four years.
Abed was scheduled to have an operation on October 10th, 2023, but three days before that Israel launched its war, postponing his urgently needed treatment.

Abedel and his family have suffered immense losses throughout Israel's genocidal war.
His 28-year-old daughter, Shaima, her entire family, along with her two children and husband were killed in an Israeli air strike hitting their apartment in Gaza City. That's a month after the war began.

Abed's son, Ahmed Abo Askar, is trying to have his father evacuate the Strip for cancer treatment.

How will Pakistan deal with the unrest in Balochistan? | Inside Story

01. Februar 2026 um 17:30

It's called Pakistan's forgotten war. And it's been running for decades in Balochistan, the country's largest province by land area.
Another wave of violence has claimed the lives of more than a hundred people.
The Balochistan Liberation Army, or the BLA has claimed responsibility for the atttacks, described as the deadliest so far.
The BLA has escalated its attacks in recent years, saying it's fighting for an independent Balochistan.
In Islamabad, the government accuses what it calls its enemies for the violence carried out by armed separatists.
So, what will it take to end the cycle of violence in Balochistan?

‘MSF has a very big footprint here in Gaza,’ says emergency coordinator

01. Februar 2026 um 17:10

Gaza's health ministry has warned 20,000 patients are trapped and unable to leave for treatment abroad.
That includes 4,000 people suffering from cancer.
Only 3,100 people were allowed to leave Gaza for treatment, since Israel shut the crossing nearly two years ago.

Despite the critical humanitarian situation, Israel is moving forward with its decision to ban Doctors Without Borders (also known by the French acronym MSF) from operating in Gaza.
MSF is one of the largest organisations in the Strip.

Claire Nicolet, an emergency coordinator with MSF, says the organisation is experiencing a shortage of supplies due to limited deliveries to Gaza.

Die EU möchte NGOs finanziell massiv fördern. Der Grund für diese Entscheidung lässt aufhorchen.

Ukraine will never sacrifice its territories or its people to Russia: Ukrainian MP

01. Februar 2026 um 16:21

Ukraine's president says the next round of trilateral talks on ending the war with Russia will resume in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Kyiv is ready for “substantive” two-day talks.

Russia currently holds around twenty percent of Ukrainian territory.
It has been slowly taking villages and settlements in Ukraine over the past year.
Former president Dmitry Medvedev says Russia is interested in ending the war with a victory, as he says as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, the fighting continues in Ukraine. Russian attacks have injured at least six people at a maternity hospital in Zaporizhzhia.
The governor called it ”war waged against life”.
Russia and Ukraine recently agreed to stop strikes on energy infrastructure as temperatures of -15 and lower have gripped both countries.

Oleksandr Merezhko is a Member of Ukraine's Parliament and Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee.
He says his country will not give up territory to Russia.

Schweres Minenunglück im Ostkongo: Hunderte Opfer nach Erdrutsch in Rubaya

Von:RT DE
01. Februar 2026 um 15:24

thumbnail

"Kuba wäre wieder frei" – Trump stellt "Deal" gegen humanitäre Krise in Aussicht

Von:RT DE
01. Februar 2026 um 14:55

thumbnail
