Palestinians in need of urgent medical care are set to leave Gaza through the Rafah crossing as it reopens for the first time in nearly two years.
Ambulances and buses are transferring patients and some of their family members from southern Gaza to the border with Egypt.
Israel is severely limiting the number of daily crossings to Palestinians with prior approval.
Only 50 patients with two family members a day will be allowed to cross.
But there are more than 20,000 patients waiting for treatment abroad.
For patients in Gaza whose injuries or illnesses cannot be treated locally, evacuation abroad can mean the difference between life and death.
But getting out takes time and it is tightly controlled.
Dr Mohammed Abu Salmiya, director of Gaza City’s al-Shifa Hospital, says there are 20,000 patients in the Palestinian territory, including 4,500 children, in urgent need of medical evacuation.

Foreign students are gradually returning to Damascus to study Arabic after more than a decade of absence caused by Syria's civil war. Before 2011, the capital hosted hundreds of international learners annually through universities and institutes, but the conflict forced a complete halt. The University of Damascus, which once ran exchange programmes with Western institutions, currently has no international students enrolled in its Arabic programme, though officials say they are ready to welcome learners again. Students from Malaysia and other countries now attending private institutes say they are drawn by immersive teaching and Syria's cultural heritage, whilst local students express hope that Damascus can rebuild its reputation as a centre for Arabic learning.

Vietnam's economy is navigating a sharp rise in tariffs whilst pivoting towards tourism and services to sustain growth.
The country's textile industry, employing millions since the post-war era, now faces a combined 37 per cent tariff increase that manufacturers compare to the pandemic's economic shock.

Patients in Gaza who cannot be treated locally must undergo a lengthy, tightly controlled process to be evacuated abroad, often determining life or death.
Doctors submit cases through hospitals to a central referral committee, with approvals coordinated by the World Health Organization.
Final clearance is required from Israel, before evacuations can take place.
Many patients died while waiting, including three-year-old Ibtisam Abu Ameera, whose papers were approved only days before her death.
Since the Rafah crossing closed, at least 1,268 Palestinians have died awaiting medical evacuation, while around 20,000 remain on waiting lists.
Israel says it will allow 50 patients a day to leave, a pace that could take more than a year to clear the backlog.
Although Rafah is reopening, limited numbers mean many critically ill patients may still be left behind.

As tensions rise between Washington and Tehran, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has warned that a US attack could trigger a regional war. This comes as Donald Trump says he hopes for a deal, even while US military assets are positioned in the region and backchannel diplomacy continues.
Al Jazeera spoke to Trita Parsi, executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, about the risks and possible off-ramps.
Parsi says behind-the-scenes talks are underway, led by regional states including Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, Oman and Saudi Arabia, all seeking to prevent war. He argues most countries in the region believe a US–Iran conflict would be devastating and deeply destabilising, with no quick or clean victory for Washington. Parsi says the most effective path to de-escalation would be direct contact between Iran and Trump, even without formal negotiations. He believes Iran’s warnings of a regional war are credible and aimed primarily at Trump, as the White House may be overestimating Iran’s weakness and pursuing unrealistic demands. Parsi adds that Tehran calculates a limited but forceful response could shatter expectations of an easy US win, though he warns this strategy carries grave risks and could spiral into a prolonged war. Ultimately, he says diplomacy remains possible if Iran chooses to engage directly before the situation is tested militarily.

The Syrian government is preparing to enter Kurdish-controlled areas in the northeast following an agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to integrate its fighters into the army.

Around 4,000 patients are suffering from cancer waiting for care that they cannot get in Gaza, waiting to be medically evacuated.
65-year-old Abed El Halim Abo Askar is one of them.
He has been battling prostate cancer for four years.
Abed was scheduled to have an operation on October 10th, 2023, but three days before that Israel launched its war, postponing his urgently needed treatment.
Abedel and his family have suffered immense losses throughout Israel's genocidal war.
His 28-year-old daughter, Shaima, her entire family, along with her two children and husband were killed in an Israeli air strike hitting their apartment in Gaza City. That's a month after the war began.
Abed's son, Ahmed Abo Askar, is trying to have his father evacuate the Strip for cancer treatment.

Gaza's health ministry has warned 20,000 patients are trapped and unable to leave for treatment abroad.
That includes 4,000 people suffering from cancer.
Only 3,100 people were allowed to leave Gaza for treatment, since Israel shut the crossing nearly two years ago.
Despite the critical humanitarian situation, Israel is moving forward with its decision to ban Doctors Without Borders (also known by the French acronym MSF) from operating in Gaza.
MSF is one of the largest organisations in the Strip.
Claire Nicolet, an emergency coordinator with MSF, says the organisation is experiencing a shortage of supplies due to limited deliveries to Gaza.

Ukraine's president says the next round of trilateral talks on ending the war with Russia will resume in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Kyiv is ready for “substantive” two-day talks.
Russia currently holds around twenty percent of Ukrainian territory.
It has been slowly taking villages and settlements in Ukraine over the past year.
Former president Dmitry Medvedev says Russia is interested in ending the war with a victory, as he says as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, the fighting continues in Ukraine. Russian attacks have injured at least six people at a maternity hospital in Zaporizhzhia.
The governor called it ”war waged against life”.
Russia and Ukraine recently agreed to stop strikes on energy infrastructure as temperatures of -15 and lower have gripped both countries.
Oleksandr Merezhko is a Member of Ukraine's Parliament and Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee.
He says his country will not give up territory to Russia.

Israel’s delay in opening the Rafah border for sick and wounded Palestinians to receive life-saving medical treatment until Monday exemplifies its desire to show its in complete control over Gaza, an analyst says.
“When I see what’s going on I can only think of the history of colonialism, and control is absolutely central to colonialism,” said Mohamad Elmasry, a professor with the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies.
“We see the Israelis over and over again reminding the Palestinians first and then all of us by extension that they are in control. I think the violence we saw yesterday was a part of that, and I think these very extreme and absurd measures that they’re taking at the Rafah border crossing is further evidence that Israel wants to demonstrate [control].”
Israel announced the movement of Palestinians will not start until a “test phase” of security screenings is carried out on Sunday.

The Rafah Crossing, once Gaza's main lifeline to the outside world, is reopening after being shut for almost two years.
Israel says procedures are being tested to allow for the limited passage of residents on Monday.
Ambulances are already queuing on the Egyptian side of the crossing.
Thousands of sick and wounded Palestinians are seeking urgent medical care abroad.
But Israel is expected to control the numbers allowed to leave and Palestinians fear many won't be let back in.

The Rafah Crossing's reopening offers a critical lifeline for Gaza's most severely injured, yet with Israel permitting only 150 evacuations per day, the estimated 20,000 Palestinians requiring urgent medical care face a three-year wait for treatment. Dr Mohammed Tahir, head of medical evacuation and Chief of Surgery at Fajr Global, describes patients suffering from multi-drug resistant infections, neglected polytrauma injuries, and conditions requiring time-critical intervention that Gaza's decimated healthcare infrastructure cannot provide.
Between July and November 2024, over 1,000 patients died waiting for evacuation, and families now face an agonising choice between seeking treatment abroad with no guarantee of return or remaining in Gaza despite life-threatening medical needs.
Tahir added 150 patients allowed by Israel to evacuate daily through Rafah “does not even scratch the surface” of what is needed. “This is just a token,” he said.
